If you would like to bring your magic to the next level, I think it is very important that you try to get as close with your effect as possible to the real thing. First, you should always think how would it really look like if you could do real magic. Example: when vanishing a coin, try to put the coin in your hand and look in the mirror to see how that looks, then recreate the whole motion with a move so the coin only looks like it goes into your hand.
When I see magicians perform my table, I often wonder if they have ever thought about how it would look like if this table could float. First of all, I don't think if this table had real powers that you could really control the table and command him what to do. And that is exactly what I miss if I watch the magicians float the table. Salvano told me once that if a magician comes to him and says, "You should see how I float the Zombie," he always answered, "I don't want to see it. If you float the Zombie, it can't float." The real illusion only starts if the object has his own life, and that is the problem for almost every magician. They always want to control the scene when, in fact, you have to pretend that you are only guiding the table, you just make sure that no one gets hurt. Practice the basics, then master it, and at the end, forget how it is done and just simply let it happen. If you reach that level, and that by the way works with all magic effects, the audience gets that feeling of real magic. The real thing happens strictly on an energy level, based on the fact if you believe in it, the audience will. When this happens, the audience can watch you over and over again without feeling they have seen it. For example, if I watch my wife (Luna Shimada) perform, it is the most amazing thing every time. I am enchanted and get lost in her performance. It looks real. Why? Because she believes it is. Same goes for Salvano or so many other pros. Forget about buying trick after trick, just master 3 and you will go very far. Always be prepared to perform at least one effect if you get asked for it. A magician is like a doctor. You are always on duty. And try to calm down when you perform. Often I see, especially the young magicians, they move too fast. You can't even focus on anything. In magic, one slogan always counts: less is more. And when you can do it easy, do it easy. Why struggle to perform a complicated manipulation effect if you can do the same thing in an easy, more magical way? Try to shrink everything down to the movement you need to perform the effect. And try to perform as much as you can, only if you feel secure on stage. The audience can relax and lose themselves in the real miracles in magic. |
