A topit is a hidden pocket.
I am also very interested in the art of topiting. I have seen that at least three different magicians have topiting tapes on the market. Which provides the most bang for the buck? What is the difference between Ammar, Page and Cloutier?

I saw Ammar in person at a lecture. From about ten feet away, and knowing what was comming, I still couldn't see where he produced a wine bottle from (the Topit). He demonstrated how to vanish objects using the Topit, it is amazing. Just a little toss, and the object is gone. I haven't comparison shopped, but I know Ammar has patterns, lecture notes, and tapes available on his web site.

Ammar did a wine bottle production on the Travel Channel's Magic in the Streets special, with which he performed Coin in Bottle.
When he produced the bottle on the special, was it hidden in a topit? I have zero experience with topits, but it seemed to me he only had it clipped somehow to the inside of his jacket. I'm just trying to get a better idea of how they work.

Dulcimer,
The bottle routine Michael did for our lecture was the same one you saw on the special ( I saw it too). I don't think this is exposing anything as Michael freely shows this in his lectures. Yes, the bottle comes out of a Topit. I think if he wanted to, he could vanish it back in there (even though he does not). The deck of cards clean up in the special is a topit too. Neat, neat device. I don't often wear a jacket so I can't use one, but would love to have one just for fun! |

Rather than call it a pocket, I would describe it as a large bag that was sewn inside a performer's jacket.
It is used more commonly to dispose of objects than to acquire them. If acquisition is desired, it is usually done through a jacket pocket as opposed to pulling it out of the topit. Someone who specializes in the construction and tailoring of a topit to a performer and his or her needs is Lynn Healy, from San Francisco, U.S.A. Her firm is named named Lynn's Sewcery and she also manufactures other specialty magic made to order items. I personally prefer Michael Ammar's adaptation of the topit. |

I just thought I'd share that I added something to my JaxonMagic Notes that fits this discussion. In the notes, I explain a fast, cheap, and great way to make your own topit. What's great about this is it doesn't take very long to make them. Even better, you can design your own topit any way you want. If you mess it up, no problem. Just start all over again.
I've come up with so many topit designs this way: including topits on both sides of my jacket that are connected, small topits, big topits. Anything you want. There are also ten other tricks in the notes so far by the way. Ron Jaxon |

A topit is basicly a big inside pocket that shoplifters used to use. It is of course now very differnt from what they used to use, but it is still the basic concept. I have the patrick page video and its pretty good for basic knowlege and technuiqes. Ammars videos I hear are good. I aslo saw him lecture and I did a private workshop with him, which he showed me his topit and some stuff with it. But now Jay Scott Berry is on tour and he did a private lecture here just for topits. his original lecture was also good, but the topit lecture was more interesting to me. Ammar does produce the bottle from the topit, and it is in his lecture notes with more detail. i suggest Ammars topit and if you can, angle it so it goes to one side which is what I did. anyway I haven't seen cloutiers video but I hear great things. Jay Scott Berry's topit is good but I wouldn't use it unless I did stage for reasons being if you have seen it. Topitting is a great tool in magic and can really improve it.

Where can I find Carl's pattern, and what is the big difference with Cloutier's and Michael's. I use Michaels but am thinking of trying Cloutier's if I can find it.
Thanks Brad

Sylvester the Jester now has a JACKETLESS topit. I know it sounds amazing but I hear its only usefull if you wear suspenders. For now I'll stick to Ammar's.

Cloutiers topit pattern is marketed item so it can be found from most dealers. It is not very different from Ammars. The main dirrerence is that it goes all the way to your back, and in theory it allows you to too heavier objects in to topit.
In my opinion Ammars patter is the best and his Topit tapes are far better than Cloutiers. Most of the time Cloutier seems like he is tossing stuff inside his pocket and that is what he is doing. |
