I've received an odd comment twice recently, and was wondering in anyone else here has encountered this: I was working too hard!
The comments were more on the order of "you can take a short break every hour or so", and "you don't need to try get to every guest", or simply "relax a little". What I find funny is that, well, I am relaxing! I'd much rather go do another 5-minute routine for guests than sit in the corner sipping Pepsi for five minutes. It's not that I'm frenetic - far from it - it's just that a) I feel I'm getting paid to work, not to take a break, and b) I really enjoy working. Has anyone else here been chided for working too hard? |

I know what you mean - when I was working restaurants, I was having so much fun myself, that I got the same.
Wouldn't it be great if all 'work' was this way. |

Yes sir I've been told that.... In my experience those comments always come from lazy people. I like to work at my own pace regardless if they think that I'm making them look bad....

The management may be seeing your enthusiasm to perform as somewhat "overly aggressive" and may be worried it will scare off patrons that want a more casually relaxed atmosphere.
Without seeing the environment and your workings, its hard to say why...

Normally when I play a restaurant, it's for a 2 or 3 hour gig. I don't take break at all. WHO needs a break for such a short engagement.
HOWEVER...my Saturday and Sunday Gig is 9 Hours EACH day...from 12pm to 9pm which usually works out be a 10 hour day b/c if we're busy, I stay till 10pm. Usually, I will take a quick 30 minute break around 5pm b/c typically from 5pm to 6pm there's a lull, so I feel that I can break away w/o it effecting the flow too much. The restaurant let's me eat there for free so I just get my food and go chill somewhere quiet for 30 mintues. I eat, I reset things that need to be reset, and just breathe....then it's BACK to business!

A little off topic, but, a small group of Magicians get together once in a while. It has been mentioned that some of us are "working too hard". For example, a chop cup magically appears and at the end of the routine, after producing 2 large items, the chop cup disappears via the top--. I think it makes sense that the cup comes full circle, magically appearing, then disappearing.
My question is, what is going too far to create a magic routine to perform in a restaurant environment? It takes a lot more work to use utility devices and gimmicks. Are the results worth the extra work? |

I have people come up to me after I have just finished at a table and they say 'you can take a back you know'. I also feel the same way you do. I feel uncomfortable stood doing nothing but when I am performing for the guests I feel at LOT more relaxed and am enjoying myself.
Thanks, magico563 |

Great post. I get such a rush out of performing that I could never imagine taking a break. I worked fast food in management for too many years so no stranger to no breaks. lol
I guess the audience will just never get it from our perspective (even with blatant exposure). So much more to performing than meets the eye. The history, to art form, the skill and many other factor that make magic what it should be. Kex |
