Hi All,
I wanted to show off my project that I announced a while ago in the Workshop forum. I am happy with how it turned out (for a first try) and how inexpensive it was, the whole project was less than $18.00. Since I don’t have any tools everything was purchased from Hobby Lobby. I wanted a box that looked old, so I finished it with Danish Oil and aged it with shoe polish. It looks better in person than the pictures. Please view pictures at http://www.photobucket.com/BCSDenver . Thanks, Bruce |

Good job.
After much soul searching about a signature, I decided not to have one.

That's a very nice box. Here's an idea. Take those corner pieces off and use some lacquer remover on them to get rid of the clear coat. Then let them tarnish a little.
Also, if you want to age the box a little more, get a piece of chain and whop it with the chain a few times. Then re-stain it. You can also use a soldering iron and a screwdriver to do more work on it. It all depends on how "aged" you want it to look. I think it looks fine as is, though.

Thank you all for your kind words. I had fun doing this. I listed instructions for my project in the Workshop forum. I plan to make some other boxes for my collection and will post pictures if you all would like to see them. I learned a lot from this one and hope that they improve each time I make one.
Jake, I have to admit that the hardware used came with the box, I feel proud that you commented positively of my project. Thanks, Bruce |

Bruce,
Excellent work. I love boxes and I do love working with wood. Oddly enough, I was never good with boxes. LOL! If its ok with you.... I would like to order a box from you. I too have a Johnsons set , but its a 4 piece set. Best from Manila, Rannie If you decide to make one for me....find a way to put a hallmark. These little things matter to me.

Rannie,
You will be my first contact if I ever decide to go to market. Like you I can’t makes boxes, I am at the mercy of what I can find. I also have the matching chop cup, for it I have another box planned. Thanks, Bruce |

Nice work Bruce!
Bill's suggestion for distressing is a good one. I have a method I've been using for 30 years that can make a brand new piece of wood look well over 100! It's time consuming but well worth the results! |

You might consider making a very thin wood frame / tray with a bit of padding and some good velvet or felt to add as a performance-top / close-up pad for the case and it could be used as a mini close-up “stage” for performance that way.
Nice work! Magically, Walt |

Walt,
I like your idea of a close up stage, I will file that one for a future project. Thanks, Bruce |

Bruce, that looks great! Did you use foam under the velvet for the sculpted padding inside?
That really makes the cups look special, really builds audience anticipation! Steven |

Steven,
Thanks, yes there is foam and batting material. I will be posting a box that I made for my chop cup soon. Bruce |

Be very careful when choosing lining/padding materials for certain kinds of cups. Some padding material can break down chemically and cause tarnishing.

Bill,
What should be avoided? That is why I put batting around the foam. Thanks, Bruce |

There was some green polyurethane foam that some of the Anvil style cases were lined with about 20 or so years ago that broke down under heat and moisture to form various kinds of acids. The grey foam seems to be safe.
If you have silver cups, avoid cardboard boxes.

I was having a look online and I found this site:
http://www.finehardwoodboxes.com/ That's one fine craftsman! I wonder if the desk boxes would hold a set of cups?
