Bruce that is one classy box for your cups.

Tom I agree the natural burled top on the desk box is very artsy.

Very nice Bruce. You've inspired me to work on some items like this.

Thanks for the link Tom.

Bruce, I forgot to say that your box is excellent.
Sorry about that.

Tom & Eric,
Thanks for the pat on the back... and the link to other boxes. I am saving for power tools and hope to do work like that some day. I am finishing another box I made for my chop cup and a magic wand. I'll post soon.
Thanks,
Bruce

Anyone can see these boxes - they are for sale at Hobby Lobby for $3.99. Looks like BCS did a good job painting/finishing them - he kept the original hardware.

If there is an IKEA store in your vicinity, sometimes you can find boxes there that are suitable. With a bit of hardware switching, etc, you can do some nice things.

If you can only find a box without a lid, here's a trick that will work. Get a piece of plywood the same thickness as the walls of the box and glue the box to the piece of plywood, using yellow PVA glue. Let it dry overnight, with a weight on the bottom of the box to clamp it.

Using a table saw, trim off the excess wood (or, you can do this before you glue it in place!) Then figure out how deep you want the bottom part of the box to be and draw a line all the way around the box at that point. Set your rip fence to that depth and saw the top part of the box away from the bottom.

You can also do this with a hand saw. It takes longer but works just fine.
