The new, July 2008, copy of Harper's Magazine (not Harper's Bazzarre) has a 13page story by Alex Stone, about competing in the FISM.
One of the last living 10-in-one performers. I wanted to be in show business the worst way, and that was it.

Read the article and loved it! Some magi might grumble because it contains some exposure, even going so far as to explain what a topit is. But it gave a more thrilling and vivid account of a magic tournament than I'd read anywhere!

Good article.
I don't really approve of exposure, but it's not the "killer of magic" we make it out to be ... in even moderately skilled hands most of these "closely guarded secrets" can still entirely fool even the smart-aleck who is looking for them. The topit, in particular, if properly rehearsed, is wonderfully undetectable! |

I was appalled by the article, not because exposure harms magicians, but simply as a profound act of disrespect to the other performers. It was an outrageous betrayal of them on a personal level and of SAM, which sponsored him. Remember, like any SAM member, Stone took an oath not to expose methods. I guess he fooled them.
Do you think the performers ever imagined that the methods behind their years of hard work would be so cavalierly exposed by a fellow competitor in a general-interest publication? Was it on that basis that they socialized with them? Did you miss the tone of the article? It was "look at these strange, funny magicians at this weird 'olympics.'" He was constantly commenting on other performers' mistakes and gizmos that didn't work. |
