I am thinking of using this effect and was wondering people's thoughts on it. The good and the bad.

Ring on Brandy Glass
A borrowed ring is tossed at a brandy sniffer and instantly, it links onto the stem of the glass. The only way to remove it is to smash the glass. No brandy glass refills to worry about. You break the glass at each performance yet you can use it over and over again! A new principle in magic that will even fool you. This comes complete with the Brandy Glass and detailed instructions explaining three routines. NOTE: You do not need a Himber ring to do this routine. The borrowed ring actually links onto the stem. The easiest and most amazing version you'll ever see. A great ending to a Himber Ring routine or you can incorporate it into your own routine. Bruce Kalver has come up with the easiest, most direct version of this effect and it's so easy to do! I have sold a few of these on magicvault.net and the effect has received pretty good feed back. Just make sure you get the original Bruce Kalver one.

Mmreed. Your description is a bit simplistic, as it doesn't really work the way you describe. You can all see the REAL WORK on this in the August 2007 issue of Genii. The original effect was created by yours truly for Fred Kaps, who did it on TV in England and Europe.

Pete,
The description was taken right from the supplier website that was printed up and is the effect by Bruce Kalver. Not sure if Bruce modified the one you created, or what - that would be an issue between you and Bruce.... but I would be interested in knowing if it is indeed the same effect. Please let us know if it is.

If you read the August Genii, the full story and several handlings are included.
Originally, I had the idea and was working on different ways to do it one-man. And in 1980 in a session with Fred Kaps I gave it to him. What he did on TV was fabulous. No fiddling, no tells. Borrowed ring vanished while he was working behind a bar with a man and woman watching. It was the man's ring. The ring was tied to a cord an put into a ring box with ends of cord hanging down. Spec's hold ends, box opened ring gone. (Clifton ring move). Then he chatted a bit and said something like, "Oh I forgot your drinks." He pours one for lady, then brings out a glass to pour for the man... and the borrowed ring is on the stem. He placed the glass down covered with a napkin and with a small mallet broke the glass and returned the ring. That presentation used a hidden helper but could have been done solo, but why when it is faster/cleaner to have assistance? I don't know the date of Kalvar's version or his inspiration. It is clever but without looking it up there were some drawbacks IN MY OPINION. When Genii did the cover story and wanted tricks I decide that it was time to pudt mine in print... and to "get it back" came up with a couple of improvements to the handling using Kalvar's thinking re the gimmick. I don't know who the other person is, but somone else marketed a copy of Kalvar's routine, using TALLER glasses. What a change???? Paul Gertner's ring on hourglass was inspired by hearing and maybe seeing Kaps' presntation of my effect. (Paul told me this himself... and his item is fabulous).

The Kalver gimmick is the only one I've seen commercially available. I believe that's what the original post was asking. Does anyone have this version for a review?

Mmread: Is there a link to the site? I can't believe it says "A borrowed ring is tossed at a brandy sniffer and instantly, it links onto the stem of the glass."

Hi Pete and others,
I was lucky enough to actually be part of the audience during the Kaps show. Needless to say, the routine is just as Pete describes. It was a KILLER!!!!! Enjoy the search. Regards, Paul Green |

I found the link and the quote. I bought this when it first came out as I was "curious" -- unfortunately the video that came with it got tangled and I can't play it. With the props inhand I cannot see how yu could just borrow a ring and toss it into the glass and have it link. You could do it under cover (as I have done)... and a few other ways, but with lots of skill and GUTS and a switch early on (or a vanish).
Kalver's prop is excellent by the way. Posted: Jun 19, 2008 2:16pm A couple of ERRORS CREPT IN. In my above post I said 1980... it should have read 1970 (ten more years earlier)... And I have misspelled Bruce Kalver's name as Kalvar... to which I apologize. Also, I would suggest if you are interested in the trick buy his version and work up your own handling and routine. Also check the August 2007 Genii for the full story and two unique handlings.

I just bought this effect myself and I am a bit disappointed in the fact the glass has to be hidden in order to have the spectator's ring appear on it.
Does anyone have any creative ideas. I was hoping to be able to cover it with a silk to get a borrowed ring on it but it does not seem to be the case. |

DAmon, get the August 2008 Genii and see how I do a couple of versions without any cover. Just misdirection and handling.
