Can you suggest some music that can be used for escape acts? All I can think of right now is the Mission Impossible soundtracks.

What type of escape is this going to be done to?

It all depends on what type of escape you'll be performing...dramatic, comedy, etc. Some of the guys here have seen me do a routine and use Billy Joel's "Always a Woman" music, and other people have seen me do routines to Rupert Holmes "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)".
The only stupid question is the one not asked.

What type of escape, but also what type of character are you and what kind of audience do you play to?
An older crowd will think Mission Impossible is edgy, a bunch of kids will yawn at it. I have used The Crystal Method and My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult. If you are doing a dramatic escape, you will want to pick music with beats per minute at the high end to get their heart rates up. If the escape is not carefully choreographed, music that repeats or doesn't really go anywhere (techno, electronica, etc.) is good. In general, movie soundtracks are good. There is some promising material on the Daredevil soundtrack. Movie soundtracks are written to underscore action, so they work well for a thrill act like an escape. Mission Impossible is not a bad choice, just a little predictable. Yours, Paul |

This is not my advice, but I used it anyway and it worked very well. I used music from the old Conan Movie. The hard driving music got the audience's hearts pumping, and on the edge of their seats. It also suited my style.

I've used Wagner's "Siegfried's Funeral" a few times.

At the last W.W.E.A.R. for my 100 ft. Rope Escape, with a plastic bag over my head, I used "Requium for a Dream" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KJTZo_ho_4 but started it at 3:56. Very powerful! I did a comedy strait jacket escape with "Let's go Crazy" by Prince, once. I've used ragtime music the 100 ft. escape while the 2 assistants were tying me. I think that fast music psychologicly helps speed them up in the tying. I believe music with escapes is very important.

"Mars" from Gustav Holst's "The Planets" suite might be good for a very dramatic escape. It builds gradually and has some great crescendos - if you could time your escape to end on the last note, it could make for great effect.

Jeeezzzeee. You guys don't get out much; either that, or you're keeping it to yourself...
How about come pieces from Cirque du Soleil? The first Illusionworks by Rand Woodbury had good music, too. They are in Florida. I hear that Marotta will come and play something from his iPod if you buy him a meal.

In hopes of saving someone an expensive headache... If you are being paid for your performance, be aware that you must pay royalties on the music you use unless it states that it can be used royalty free. Some tapes and CDs exist with performance tracks that can be used without royalties. See this link for more info.... http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/music-royalties3.htm

Bill White sells CDs of royalty-free music for magic, some of which will work well for escapes.

I've just read a post by Kondini in a thread about drama in escapes (http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=363623&forum=18&12) and thought I'd revive this thread.
In his post Ken mentions that music is the best way to build tension and drama, yet I'm sure I've read somewhere else in All Tied Up that by using music for an escape it makes it seem too planned. My personal preference is to have music playing unless I'm doing a routine where I'm talking. What's the general consensus on this? I also use the "music running out" bit in my show. If you don't know the ruse essentially you don't escape. The music ends and you're still in the restraints. I have someone come on, give me a drink and then I try again. This time escaping before the end of the track, maybe about a minute in. I find this helps with the issue of things looking too planned out. Its not for everyone, but it works for me and I've seen it work really well for others too. So, how do you guys and gals use music within your escapes (if you use it at all) to build the drama and the tension?

My first cage/bag/handcuff escape, the music ran out. It was real not planned. The cuffs were real and a (b)itch to deal with. I did get out though, and everyone thought I was in trouble during the escape. It felt bad to me to have been, but the escape worked.
One time, when my assistant failed to turn on the music in a timely manner, I was approached and told I should have had music because without the music it was boring just staring at me.
