Hello Everyone,
Has anyone here done MagicSports? I guess people are wondering what I am talking about... A few weeks ago our local IBM Ring #41 had Tim Ellis & Sue-Anne Webster lecture for us... One of the things that Tim showed us was a game that he said was part of MagicSports... I went to Tim's website and found out more information on MagicSports, needless to say I started playing the games right away. I have had lots of fun playing these games and hope to have some of our local clubs do this for a meeting. But not only is it fun but it helps develop your improvising and creativity skills. Check Tim’s web page that has a list of MagicSports games: http://www4.tpgi.com.au/users/katzkin/PubMagicSports.htm If anyone starts playing with these ideas, I would like to hear how it goes... Hummm... Seems like Tim Ellis is having a problem with his website. You can see the MagicSports page reproduced with permission from Tim Ellis and Gaston here

Mark,
I have quite an interest in MagicSports, but have yet to try it. I'm a student of TheatreSports, as created by Keith Johnstone, and consider improv to be the sharpest tool in my entertainment bag. Theatrespors was originally created for playwrites (not actors) to create new story ideas to write about, so the potential for MagicSports to help develop your magic is definately there. However, I've yet to actually try any of it formally, as I can't get any benefit out of playing MagicSports by myself in my basement. I just can't get the creative momentum going without an audience to feed from. Someday I would like to try a performance on MagicSports... but here in Calgary there just aren't the kind of people required to do it succesfully. I can think of maybe three people, including myself, that would be interested in such a thing. Until then.... I'll just stick to inserting improv segments into my own performances. -Ryan Pilling

Ryan, I have actually started writing instructions on a few games that I play by myself. Sure it's not as fun but you have to do what you can.
One of my favorite single person games is to take a list of props that I have and list them on slips of paper and put them in a hat. Then I pick three props and make them work together no matter that they are.

Great to hear you were inspired by MagicSports!
If you want to catch it LIVE in the USA, we'll be playing a demonstration match at the SAM in Vegas, then doing workshops and matches at FISM in Den Haag with THE FLICKING FINGERS! Don't miss it!!

Ryan,
This is a great article on random thoughts. I also love the random thought generator. I'll have to give it a try tonight.

As far as I know, Magicsports were invented by Tim Ellis and Gaston from the Flicking Fingers. I have met Gaston a few times and he is one of the nicest and most creative magicians I have ever met. He is a great magician, actor and lecturer. In fact, all Flicking Fingers are great. If you get the chance to see anyone of the working, take it. It will be a great experience for you!!!

Just a thought...how about online magic sports? Some of the games could be adaptable to be played in a forum like this...

If you do something in that style, it may be a "brainstorm"... but not true to the heart of TheatreSports (I'm assuming MagicSports success is based on the same basics) You see, spontaneity is a BIG factor in TheatreSports... part of the concept is to stop consciously thinking what to do, and get to the point that you are riding the wave of action, acting by instinct alone. The result is completely natural development of the stories. It's kinda like the people who come up with their best ideas on stage, with the adrenaline flowing. -Ryan Pilling

Very interesting idea!
(Just thinking out loud) Maybe with the help of a real time chat room... MSN ICQ AOL? Something like that? You couldn't really work on the magic part of it, but you could work on routines and patter??? Hummm.... Intresting Idea?

Hi,
I am from Melbourne Australia and know Tim Ellis Well. I enjoy playing/watching Magic Sports a lot and am lucky to be able to learn all the games first hand from Tim. We have a magic night once a month at different venues around Melbourne where we have a chance to try out our magic with the public for 2 hours, then for the next 3 hours all the magicians get together in the venues spare room and workshop and share magic outside the normal magic club setting. On these nights we will try out a different Magic Sports game and it is not just fun but a really great way to practice our craft. Just to finish off we had the Flicking Fingers come Down Under for a small convention weekend and during this we watched the master of Magic Sports Tim and the Fingers demonstrate how Magic Sports is really played I think Magic Sports would be a great idea to add to FISM |
