Hello all,
I’m a long-time lurker, but first-time poster. I’ve been studying card magic for a couple of years now. I’ve come to the realization that as we learn new sleights and tricks, our repertoire evolves based not only in taste, but also in ability. That being the case, many tricks are learned or ignored, and then forgotten, only to later reappear in one’s mind. Being somewhat of a computer geek (and having nothing better to do with my time), I’ve decided to create a (Microsoft Access) database to store tricks as I learn (read) them, so that I can have an easy-to-access repository of material. After this very long preamble, the reason I’ve come here is to ask for suggestions of what information to store. In other words, if you wanted to search a database on card tricks, what information would be valuable to you? So far, I have the following fields for the database: TrickName Description (a simplified version of “Effect”) CreatorName (inventor of the trick) Setup (if trick requires a setup) Rating (1 through 5 scale where I give my rating of trick) Sleights (sleights used in the trick) Source (book, dvd, etc. where trick is explained) Impromptu? (“yes/no” field specifying whether trick is impromptu) Force? (“yes/no” field specifying whether trick needs a force) Gaffs? (“yes/no” field specifying whether trick requires gaff cards) PacketTrick (“yes/no” field specifying whether trick is a packet trick) Notes Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Cheers, BarryGon |

Type of effect (classification) ie. Transformation, Revealation, Transposition, etc.
History/Credit info...maybe? Cardamagically, DOM. :)

Hi Barry. The guys at MagicVault have something very close to that. Maybe you can get ideas from look at its description or since its priced pretty low just use it. their website is http://www.magicvault.net and they are really cool guys that will help you the best they can. They are the ones that introduced me to these great forums!

I would include a section for basic patter or storyline ideas. These are easy to forget, especially when they're good. For me, anyways. I even forget the bad ideas.
Sounds like a great way to organize what you have learned. |

I'm about to launch such a software myself.
It will be at magicshowbuilder.com once I finish the beta runs I did not know about MagicVault. |

There was an application mentioned a while back, maybe as far as two years ago, which wasn't created for magic specifically but as a scrapbook program to store anything. It seemed to lend itself perfectly to our use at it could also embed photos, video clips, etc. Highly configurable, I think it was. Anyone remember it's name?
A database sounds especially useful if you plan to put it online privately, so that you (alone) could access it from other locations as well as from home. My low tech version of that is a notebook, which is also very much portable. The new one is going to have an index with page numbers and specifics, as well as blank pages for notes behind each effect. Stacks and formulas at the back. For me, sitting down anywhere with real paper is preferable to a computer database. Unfortunately my handwriting should have a toxic waste warning label. It stinks. Anyway, do what works best for you. Good luck with it and welcome to the café!

How about whether or not a table is necessary. (This is not strictly boolean data, but you could fudge it.)

I would suggest a text field that you populate from a list box or just use a combo box. Link the combo box to a table with all Keywords that you think up and then can also add to the list easily. then later on when searching you set up a search form with the same combo box listing for search criteria. this reduces data entry errors and ensure your keyword search gets all available data.

A field for a graphic and/or video of the effect might be useful for anyone who was interested in putting this much information together. Maybe a date field for last performed and for who...in case you were lucky enough to be asked back to do a show but didn't want to perform the same stuff.
