I can't remember who introduced me to IBM but I do remember the outcome. I had been doing magic for about 6 years and had performed for preschool and a few private parties. My show did not change much and I was not very active in the magic community. As a matter of fact, I didn't even know that there was a magic community. I moved to Buffalo NY and joined Gene Gordon's Ring 12 with the understanding that I would be called on to perform someday. Can you imagine standing in front of a group of extremely good magicians that had been doing magic longer than I had been alive? As I proceeded with my very simple cut and restored rope routine I wondered, what could I begin to show these people that they hadn't already seen hundreds of time before. The answer came to me, NOTHING. Struck by fear I made it through the routine and the members of the club where the ones that gave me the courage and self confidence to continue with the magic that I loved so much. I couldn't believe that some of the members came up to me and asked to see one or two of the moves I had used and others offered some great suggestions that I still use today. I was fortunate enough to learn from some of best, such as Gene Gordon, Karl Norman, Eddie Fechter and many many more. If it weren't for the local clubs, I would never have advanced to the level of magic that I wanted to reach. Come to think of it, I still haven't reached that level but the clubs have gotten me a lot closer than I would have ever reached on my own. I have always seeked out any local magic clubs where ever I go because of the common bond and a chance to learn more.
I have to agree with Bill, "if you don't like it, why don't you fix it?" You may not be able to make it happen overnight but you can make it happen.

Some might say many in clubs are socializing with magic business cards.
Ring 129 is a great resource of warm folks with a wide background of knowledge. From magic to puppeteering, side show, roping, comedy, stage to close up. As above one gets out of a club what one puts in. In most clubs it is a few that do most of the work. My opinion is that time with a club and time away from magicians can both produce positive results. Looking outside of magic can greatly enhance ones performance and connection with audiences.
