Has anyone here looked at the Magic Jack ( http://www.magicjack.com ) as a second business line? I just ordered one; I took the 5-year special, $100 total (no additional charges) for unlimited local and long distance US and Canada calling (inbound and outbound), voicemail, and call forwarding. Plus it is mobile, plug it into any PC (Windows or Mac) that has internet access, and plug a phone into the box and you're in business. It is not PC dependant, so I can take it on the road wit me and have my office number with me without cell phone charges.

It seemed like a good deal to me, and I was wondering if anyone else had looked at it.

Let me know about the quality...I am somewhat curious.

That's the one. I wish I had seen that thread before I ordered one!

Does the internet service has to be on (connected) when using Magic Jack?

Not counting the obvious above reasons, the other reason I'd hesitate about getting one is if you are calling clients, I'm sure there will be a funky number that shows up on their caller ID. Most people (myself included) will not answer the phone if they do not recognize the incoming number.

Tony,

You'll have to let us know of your personal experience with it.

Good luck!!!

From the site:

Yes, it does. You also need a working internet connection. Your computer does not need to be on for users to send you voicemail or for call forwarding, however.

A nice feature of the voicemail is that it emails it to your email account of record as a wave file.

You might consider Grand Central instead. No box to lug around; and more features. http://www.grandcentral.com

I've been using a MagicJack for several weeks now and have no complaints. It works as advertised. I had it up and running within 2 minutes. A while ago I cancelled my landline and this has been a great addition. The sound quality is better than a cell phone and I haven't dropped a call yet!

Mine is plugged into my HP laptop. I have dry loop DSL service and I just plugged my regular cordless phone into it. It's just been like having regular phone service.

How about a service like this one: http://www.freedomvoice.com/index.php

????

Has anyone had experience with such? I believe this is one of the handful of companies Jim Snack endorses/ recommends.
