I have noticed that magic is dominated by men. Most laymen can't even name a female magician. I can only name half a dozen.
But we all know this fact. What I'm concerned with is that magic seems to have more of an effect on men. At least the finger flicking aspect. What seems to work the best on women seems to be mentalism. I think it's because mentalism is more personal, the magic happens to them, it's something they can feel. What I do usually is a simple force and "mind/body reading". Hellstromism is nice too. Is it the "that's impossible" factor, or just me?

Mainly I perform card work for women actually. That is only because I run a poker club and most of the women that accompany the men there do not play poker. They come to the place for fun, to a have drink and socialise etc. I often show them card magic for their amusement and find them pleasanter than men. Well I mean men are more like magicians, so it seems to me, in that they tend to want to know how the trick is down, rather than just enjoying the magic. Women are definitely different than men and I definitely prefer women for some reason. I think they are more fun loving.

That hasn't been my experience. I seem to get bigger and better reactions from women from a well executed trick. more often than not if someone is trying to grab the cards and shuffle them or burn my hands or in some other way missing the point of watching a magic trick, that someone is male. so for what it's worth, my experience of performing for the different sexes has been different.
Mr. Quackenbush believes that there is no such thing as a good magic trick.

My experience/impression is that women are more likely to be open to supernatural/paranormal type phenomena, and thus more liable to amazement at mentalism than men who are more likely to be adamant in their belief that it's "just a trick." When it comes to magic, my observation is that anything that is hands-on (by the spectator) is a particularly good idea. Of course, magic in the spectator's hands is always super-powerful anyway, but I think even moreso with women, so spongeballs, Dr. Daley's Last Trick, Between the Palms, a coin transposition/transformation in the spectator's hands (e.g. Greg Wilson's "A Questionable Trick"). Just my 2 cents (or was it 11 cents?!)

So now, here's something funny...
We just named more women than he (Shortdog) will be able to name men! See Shortdog, you need to know your history as well (if not more than) as your sleights. The road to becoming a magician is very long...and No ONE ever makes to the destination. Enjoy the trip and along the way you'll become a better magician. Good luck - |

I can name a good amount of magicians, but remember that I have only been in the game for a little over a year. I see nothing really "Funny" about that. It's just normal. If I were to turn on a professional shuffle board game, I wouldn't know the players, or where the game started. It is a journey, I agree, but you also should not assume that I have overlooked the historical factor. I have not, but I have an extremely demanding life, so when it comes time to practice, I tend to pick up a book on technique, rather then history. My choice.

Isn't magic a Performance Art? What women magicians that were named are history?

I know some women who absolutely love card tricks.....I happen to dislike card tricks with a passion. I love the escapes....other women think it's not "ladylike" to do such things. As for mentalism....if it is performed well, I really like it....if it's performed poorly...I'd rather see a card trick. Magic for women is just like movies for women. The movie people target women with their chick flicks, but not all women like them. Some of us like a good action/adventure movie...and there are women out there who like the slasher movies. Well magic takes a lot of thought to understand. Many magicians need to use large words, and they can't always use sexiness as their hook......
I must apologize for that, but although it was obviously stupid I knew there would be some who would take it seriously and that made me giggle. Remember Margarette, I'm an idiot that should be ignored always. Really though; The most fun I have ever had with magic has been performing for women. The only problem is women also have more empathy, so when I blow a trick (So rare as to be nearly non existent) I get the sympathy applause. That sucks worse than getting laughed at. "They pity me! Hooray"
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.
