Hi,
I was wondering if anyone can give a recommendation for a DVD which covers the classics like The Cups and Balls, Chop Cup, Linking Rings, Egg Bag and Billiard balls all on one DVD? There are some DVDs that have the repertoire of a magician and cover many of these, but I don't know which would be what I am after. To be clear, I am looking for more of the classic handlings of the effects as well. I am not really interested in stylized or ultra modern interpretations. Hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance, J |

I'd recommend either the Stevens Magic Emporium Teach-In Series or the World's Greatest magic series put out by L & L Publishing. You would need to get seperate DVDs as each one covers a specific topic and offeres several routines for it. At least one of the routines covers a classic handling. For example the Linking Rings DVD includes Dai Vernon's classic 6 Ring routine among others.
For a more indepth study - especially the Linking Rings, Chop Cup and Billiard balls, another great source is the Brad Burt Teaching Videos seies. Brad is an advertiser here on the Café so check him out! |

I don't think you'll get all the classics that you mentioned on ONE DVD! It would have to cover several hours at least!

You might also look at the series of DVD's that Johnny Thompson did, called "Commercial Classics of Magic," click HERE for more info. I have not seen these, but they look like they would be excellent.
I know you asked about DVD's as opposed to books, but the Tarbell Course covers ALL the standard effects and then some. If you don't already have it, it would be a good investment and a fine reference for years to come. Click HERE to view. SETH

A good dvd set with a bunch of performances of the classics by several different performers would be the Don Alan Magic Ranch series. This is not an instructional set, but it can be educational & fun to watch.

My vote is for the Johnny Thompson Commercial Classics set..its as close to Stars of Magic on DVD as anything that has came out..in my opinion!

The Johnny Thompson set is a must have, but it doesn't have a Chop Cup, Linking Rings, Egg Bag or Billiard balls as jconstans was looking for. Not sure what set has all that.

Daryl's Fooler Doolers DVDs might be worth checking.
