So you are a "mentalist" ??
Ok- Do you still enjoy watching a pro execute some great sleight of hand? Making objects/coins vanish and appear with their impeccable skill? A simple question, but also a very important one- I feel......... My first new topic post- Scar |

Not saying I am a "mentalist"... as I am not 100% sure of what a "mentalist" is or does... But to answer your question, I, personally, do... I love watching Slight of Hand ... I love performing it as well. Gettin' got is still a great feeling in my humble opinion. Then, after he/she is done. I like to give them an envelope, that I kept in full view at all times, with dvd in side with the contents of me talking into the camera , putting another slip of paper into another envelope, I am mailing to their address. In which they get home and watch and are left wondering... " How did he know?" and you left wondering two things... 1. What is "it" that I knew... and 2. why did I misspell Slight... Absolutely. Although I draw the line just before silks and am not a big fan of ropes either. Don't know why, I just prefer cards and coins.
I'll second Abraxus comments about Lennart Green. I had the chance to see him at work at Blackpool this year. He creates the illusion of no control at all let alone no sleight of hand. Why do you feel it is an important question Scar? Anthony

I enjoy sleight of hand if it doesn't look like sleight of hand. If all of the hand movements look normal, and the work doesn't look like someone washing his hands or contorting them into shadowgraphic positions, and if all of it is logical and motivated, I love it.
If I see a beginner doing the kind of sleight of hand that looks like bad sleight of hand, then when I have a chance to take him aside, I find out if he is open to suggestions. If he is, I show him a few things that may help him clean his work up. IMHO, perfect, motivated, invisible sleight of hand is just as important to the mentalist as it is to any other practitioner of the deceptive arts. It is the art that conceals art that makes it work. And I love it when I get fooled. The same thing is true for me with well-choreographed, well-motivated illusions. This question is kind of like asking a classical musician if he enjoys listening to jazz. Most of the classical musicians I know who are open-minded really enjoy listening to good jazz.

I enjoy watching good performance pieces. SOH is to me, most enjoyed when it is not seen, otherwise it is manipulation or juggling. Nothing wrong with either of those, I do enjoy watching them as well. I also enjoy good food, movies, plays, music, the list goes on... Tony |

I prefer PERFORMING mentalism.
I prefer WATCHING magic -- ropes, doves, silks, zig-zag boxes, everything! Once you know how mentalism is done, very little of it is exciting to watch. |

I am a mentalist - and a budding part-time performer. I only perform mentalism during paid gigs.
However, and this is a big however, - I love card magic! Jason. |

I love watching any performer who is good at what he does. I'll hang around Shoot for hours and just sit there smiling as he goes through trick after trick that I know involves skills I'll never have.

I have a personal abhorrence to sleight of hand books due to never really understanding them.
I have always liked the bizarre though, so I enjoy the character and acting aspects of magic. I have enjoyed Whit Haydens great sleight of hand in the past, and others I've seen live and some on the internet and dvd.

In some ways I enjoy watching magic more, because I can be easily fooled with it. I like to wonder. As you can read here Jerome Finley messed me up with some Coin magic. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=15

Yes. I enjoy watching sleight of hand magic still very much.. as long as its entertaining overall. I could watch rocco perform anytime and enjoy it... just as much... I could watch a great card expert perform some cool and mind-blowing stuff, however, could I watch and enjoy an entire act of card manips... no matter how smooth the moves...maybe not... but a great entertainer, with a well-round blend of great sleights is awesome awesome..
I wish I had more time to watch other entertainers shows live... |

I think that's a killer question. I've got to put in my two cents. I've gone to mentalism over the last while as I felt it matched my persona better, and I've been thinking on this topic. I enjoy it still to a point, but it doesn't seem to interest me as much. I'd rather watch a mentalist. I have aboslutely no beefs with anyone here and don't want to ofend, but I think the question may have been mis interpreted a bit.
A magician who does a blindfold trick and maybey a prediction along with his sponge bunnies and 20th silks doesn't realy qualify him as a mentalist. I think the question is diffrent for a person who'm "mentalism" is his career. I think that someone who is one and says that they don't like watching it as much as other magic should probably go back to card tricks. (I've just offended someone. I know it. Sorry. Don't melt me!) Back to my no long winded response. I like watching mentalism more. I like to see how my work stacks up. I like to see how audiences react to principles. Watching SOH may be an ammusement, but I myself am confortable in living and breathing mentalism. (wow. what an a.d.d. moment) |
