I'm not picking on Penticostals here ... There are many forms of this phenomenon.
What is it? Wiki says this ..... Aside from Christians, other religious groups also have been observed to practice some form of theopneustic glossolalia. It is perhaps most commonly in Paganism, Shamanism, and other mediumistic religious practices.[20] Glossolalia was exhibited by the renowned ancient Oracle of Delphi, whereby a priestess of the god Apollo (called the Pythia) speaks in unintelligible utterances, supposedly through the spirit of Apollo in her.[citation needed] Certain Gnostic magical texts from the Roman period have written on them unintelligible syllables such as "t t t t n n n n d d d d d..." etc. It is conjectured that these may be transliterations of the sorts of sounds made during glossolalia. The Coptic Gospel of the Egyptians also features a hymn of (mostly) unintelligible syllables which is thought to be an early example of Christian glossolalia. In the nineteenth century, Spiritism was developed by the work of Allan Kardec, and the phenomenon was seen as one of the self-evident manifestations of spirits. Spiritists argued that some cases were actually cases of xenoglossia (from Greek, xenos, stranger; and glossa, language. When one speaks in a language unknown to him). However, the importance attributed to it, as well as its frequency, has decreased significantly. Some present-day spiritists regard the phenomenon pointless, as it does not convey any intelligible message to those present.[who?] Glossolalia has also been observed in the Voodoo religion of Haiti,[21] as well as in the Hindu Gurus and Fakirs of India.[22][23][24] What is it really?

The connection to the Pentecostal church goes back to the Biblical report of the Apostles gathering 10 days after the Ascension and having the Holy Spirit descend upon them. The date, 50 days after Easter, is called Pentecost (in the US and by the universal Church) ( http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/15614b.htm ). Slim King what is your recent fascination with the afterlife & faith based beliefs, nothing wrong with it just curious. Honestly I was surprised to see that there were so many here that have a non belief in the afterlife from a religous standpoint or just from a spiritual point of view. Kinesis gives a direct & to the point explainaiton of your question though.

Why would you call it a fascination? We all must face Death. Perhaps we should think of it a bit more?
If Glossilalia is a paranormal manifestation, then I'd like to know more about it. Wouldn't you?

I have Satanist, Atheist, Christian, Jewish and Muslim friends ... They all have different viewpoints. I was wondering what my friends on the Café thought?
Plus ... I'm VERY interested in the paranormal. If paranormal events are taking place. I WANT TO KNOW! Guess it's the skeptic in me

Is that no the same thing when a stage hypnotist gets one person to speak martian and another to interpret it?

MP,
Personally, I don't think so. The differences between a person in a religious, ecstatic frenzy/state of consciousness and a person on stage speaking martian are world's apart and I think you know this. In Africa I dealt firsthand with ritual possession (forced schizophrenia/MPD, etc) ancestor veneration, shamanic/ecstatic states of consciousness and all the associated phenomena that goes with it (glossolalia being one of many) and I can tell you there are enormous differences. -J

There was an interesting discussion of Glossilallia in Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson
It was good book, quite unusual, and had a very quirky beginning.
