Hi guys, I'm 29 years old and re-kindling a love of magic. I want to mostly perform for my friends and family, and decided to hone my genre of magic into closeup street impromptu.
I love gimmicks, but want to focus on stuff ordinary people carry around (so cards don't usually qualify). This would have me percieved not as a "magician" but as someone who can perform little mini miracles with ordinary stuff. I know the name causes many bias reactions but I'll say it... I think David Blaine really tapped into this desire in our nation. Can someone give me some direction? Thanks, Adrian |

I'm also returning to Magic after a long lay off and love Close-Up Impromptu stuff.
There are a lot of reviews here at the Café for this branch of magic. Two tapes that get a lot of rave reviews are Greg Wilson's "Off the Cuff" and "On the Spot". I intend to buy both in the near future. Jay Sankey's "Real Magic" video is also on my list. Check out http://www.penguinmagic.com for a demo clip. Hi Dave. Yes I actually started my internet magic interest with Penguin. They are truly great. I was thinking of those same videos, but I hadn't heard of "off the cuff", I don't think Penguin has that one. Where on the web can I find a demo video of it? Also I heard a good ring routine is Greg Wilson's "Ring Leader". I guess Greg is our guy. My concern... is Greg's stuff advanced? I mean is it appropriate enough for (albeit mature) beginners?

Off the Cuff is available at the Magic Pro Shop. The Jay Sankey video "Real Magic" is marketed for beginners. I don't have any of these videos yet so I can't comment on their difficulty, but I'm sure someone on the boards can comment on this.
I'm working my way through Ammar's Easy to Master Card Miracles 1 and his Beginning Coin magic video both of these are very good. Dave

Sounds like you want to do what I do. I do almost all coin stuff for family and friends.
You might want to try Michael Ammar's Complete Intro to Coin Magic DVD. It's all coins, and all ungimmicked, so it's totally impromptu. |

Greg Wilson's Off the Cuff and On the Spot have tons of good close-up effects with everyday objects. Jay Sankey's videos also have tons of good stuff.

I'd agree the Wilson stuff is great but I wouldn't exactly qualify it as beginner stuff. Some of it will take some time and practice but the results are wonderous. If your into street magic or jazz magic they're a must have. For a more classic approach look into the Daryl Fooler Dooler videos, also the Mulica impromptu videos has quickies you might like. Gardeners Encyclopedia of Impromptu Magic is a tome of information. Some of it is dated but tons of quicky tricks, and bar betchas. I'm not familiar with the Sankey stuff so I can't say. Hope this helps.

I have Sankey's Real Magic and it is definitely geared towards beginners. Not a lot of technique involved, but some good basic skills are taught.
I also have the ETMCM #1 DVD along with Ammar's Introduction to Coin Magic. Can't go wrong with either of these. One more to help... I do have Wilson's Ring Leader. The "moves" aren't too hard to do, but the performance/misdirection definitely takes some practice. Having said that, you will not necessarily need another ring/string resource if you purchase Ring Leader. I highly recommend it. Hope this helps, as I am also an "older" beginner (32). |

I am also an Older beginner (36) and especially enjoy doing non-gimicked routines, although I will do an occasional cub scout show in front of a group and used gimicked props.
If you are just getting back into Magic, make sure that you have Mark Wilsons Complete Course in Magic book. It covers many gimicked and non-gimicked effects. I second the Michael Ammars Complete Introduction to coin magic video/dvd. Great coin basics. You might like some rubber band magic if you like impromptu. I have Michael Ammars Classical Renditions II video (excellent, 3 effects, totally impromptu). I understand that Dan Harlan has some great material as well. Welcome back to the ranks, Mike

Most of David Blaines "Street Magic" is not total impromptu. Many of his tricks involve a deck of cards or other mechanisms such as a raven, an ash pen or even better than that television technology. As stated before Wilson's On the Spot, Sankey's Real Magic and may I add, some routines from Jon Allen's video Spectator's Don't Exist are great impromptu. Also Kolossal Killer and Hundy 500 or Slow Burn are good semi-impromptu because you can always carry them with you.
Confirming what Mike heard, Harlan's Rubber Band Magic has great impromptu routines. Spectators Don't Exist video also has a nice impromptu routine with rubber bands.

You stated you like gimmicks, Try dime and Penny. It kills. It's easy to do and you end clean.
It's great fun and will only make you want to learn more! |

I have been having a lot of luck at Illusionist.com. I am 29, tattoo artist after about 3 weeks of practice. I have had people tell me I was unnatural and in touch with my internal energy. It's great!
