Because this part of the Magic Café is supposed to have a certain amount of veracity, I have sometimes reacted rather negatively to people quoting sources of information that were, to my mind, less than scholarly.

One source I usually have a problem with is Wikipedia; however, their "sibling" -- Wikihow -- recently published this:

http://www.wikihow.com/Evaluate-the-Credibility-of-a-Source

This is a very good article.

An example of an article with little or no credibility would be an article by someone who is a rap musician discussing a secret society that may or may not exist.

It's like basing a religion on a science fiction novel.

Bill,

He might have been referring to the followers of Xenu. Inspired by Ron Hubbard, the Science Fiction Novelist. You obviously know, but others may not. This is where Scientology erupted from. Oooops, I might have crossed the line. Stay away from that volcano!

Bill,

Not only a great article, but Wikihow is an interesting source to be aware of. Thanks for letting us know.

Good post, Bill. Not all have the academic research background to know the difference between credible and non-credible reference.

One Wikipedia article I recently read stated that Erik Jan Hanussen was not Danish, but was a Czech Jew. This is interesting, because Hanussen was born in Vienna in 1889. So, what is significant about this. Czechoslovakia did not exist until 1918. He was born in Austria. There are two different facts that contradict the statement that he was Czech. Even if he were of Bohemian or Moravian descent, he would have still referred to himself as an Austrian.

Thanks Bill, this looks like a good article, I'm printing it out now to read when I get home tonight from work.
I have always distrusted Wikipedia as a primary source, although I will often start there when I am researching something, and follow through the other sources referenced. Often there is good information amongst the muddle.
