After working with Kennedy halves for some time, I decided to try out some Walking Liberties. Wow, what a beautiful coin. I purchased a roll of all 1936-P's, figuring I had the best chance of getting reasonably soft and matched coins that way - and it worked out great. Thank you, Ebay!
Question One: The problem is that I've grown attached to the natural tarnished look of these coins. It also makes them distinguishable from a greater distance. If I have custom gaffs (expanded shell to start of with) made up by Johnson or Lassen, can they maintain the same tarnished look? Or would I then need to clean/bleach/polish my gaffed/ungaffeds together to get a uniform look? Question two: On some of my existing expanded shells (probably cheaper Sasco's and Sterling's...can't remember) I've notice that sometimes the top seems "puffy"; the areas that should be flat are now somewhat convex. This doesn't seem to be the the slight loss-of-detail problem I've heard can result from the expanding process. Is this ever an issue with Lassen's or Johnson's ES's? Thanks! Doug |

Doug,
I've just bought the Johnson's shell, they are very well made. I used it already a week, completely satisfied******* |

Todd Lassen can do anything you want. Email him @ KLARENTZ@aol.com
Johnson are very good too, but since you are using silver coins, I'd say go with Todd. |

You have a few options:
One) Buy a Lassen set. Unless you tell him you want a BU coin, Todd's Walker shells are 'soft' coins which have a very nice patina. The advantage to buying a set from him is that he hand selects four additional coins to fit the shell. Since Todd's work holds such close tolerances, you may have some minor problems with a coin sticking in the shell (due to the variablity of the coins from the Mint.) The coins he sends are a perfect match for the set. Two) Buy a shell from Johnson direct. Call them and tell them you are looking for an shell with a patina and I'm sure they can send you one. If you bought a roll of Walkers, you should have no problem finding four or five that fit the sell. Johnson's quality is very good and on the silver shells I have seen I have never noticed the edges to be 'puffy'. Three) Send either Todd or Johnson the coins that you want them to work on. They'll make the shell out of the coin you select and you can match up additional coins to fit the shell. I just sold a Walker set made by Todd and I can honestly say that for the money it's your best bet. Good luck!
