Hi Everyone,
I borrowed an Apocalypse book from one of my friends two weeks ago just to see what type of material it contained. Basically I fell in love. I called my friend and immediately asked if he would sell the whole set of 4 to me. He agreed so I should be getting the other 3 soon. My question is for all you Harry Loryane book lovers. I really enjoyed Harry's style of writing and explanations. What other books of his would you recommend I purchase (not Apocalypse)? I am looking for close-up magic done with everyday objects and some cards and coins. I want real world stuff. I do not like tricks that involve deck stacks, trick decks, gambling routines, too many gimmicks, etc. Basically I want to pick up a borrowed deck and entertain. How are the Best of Friends? Please post your recommendations. Hopefully Harry will see this post and make a comment as well. Thanks in advance. |

The best advice I can give--and advice I suspect others will also offer--is to buy everything Harry put out.
Start with The Classic Collection--that has his four earliest books, including Close Up Card Magic. (He's compiling Classic Collection II as we speak and that one will include four more must have texts.) All three of the Best Of Friend volumes are also great, but are a little hard to track down. Definitely worth the effort to get all three. There are wonderful, real-world items in everything he put out. If you can find Quantum Leaps, you'll find a wonderful impromptu linking card routine that you will fry laymen with. Enjoy the search!

Hi Rimbaud,
Thanks for the suggestions. One of the reasons I am posting here is because I know Harry wrote dozens of books and some of the books are compilations of his older works. I would rather buy the compilations and save some money rather than buy them each individually. I just don't know which are which. Thanks again and keep the posts coming! |

Rumour has it that Harry Lorayne himself likes to hang out on the Magic Café and will, from time to time, recommend a book or two of his.

I echo the above: Buy anything by Harry! BTW, Harry is working on Classic Collection Vol. 2. Hopefully it will be released in the near future.

I know your asking about his books, but he also has a great DVD set.

Get the Classic Collection and if you can't afford that, at least pick up a used copy of Close Up Card Magic or Personal Secrets.

Well, Andrew, you've been advised. Now, STOP PROCRASTINATING. Get LORAYNE: THE CLASSIC COLLECTION, VOL. 1 - it is "right up your alley." Just what you're looking for. And you can get it directly from me. As you can BEST OF FRIENDS, Volumes 1 and 3 (no more vol. 2). I'll also put you on my email address list so that you'll received an email copy of the full-page ad for THE CLASSIC COLLECTION, Vol. 2 when it is available. (Vol. 2 will be my re-write, update, additions, etc., of three of my earlier books - Reputation-Makers, Rim Shots and Afterthoughts.) Email me at me personal address, listed below, and you can ask any questions you like. Best - HL
P.S.: LeConte, are you on my email address list? If not, send it to me. The book is written, and hopefully I can make it available by late fall or early winter. HL P.P.S.: A piece of advice: do NOT purchase Close-Up Card Magic or Personal Secrets separately. Save your money - you are SO MUCH better off with LORAYNE: THE CLASSIC COLLECTION, pricewise, writing wise, everything wise - and I WOULD PREFER IT. HL

I know Harry will now throw big stones at me but - a few weeks ago I wanted to buy the "Classic Collection". I went to my favorite online dealer, Hank Lee, and looked for the book. Then, it was just an idea, I checked for the books that are in the Classic Collection. They were all there, but I paid half the price of the Classic Collection-book. I know that the Classic Collection has been updated, and enhenced - but I just love old books. So, I guess if you want the newest versions, you should get the "Classic Collection" book. If you want to save money (and want the original books) buy the old books which are still available (and I already own the three books from "Classic Collection 2"..... - of course the original old books).

Thanks a load, Carsten. Aside from not helping me any (although I really don't need or want your help) your advice iS WRONG. As I've been told by many, beside the new ways (50 YEARS WORTH OF NEW WAYS), I've been told by many that the bonus sections alone (the 16 new effects/routines) are worth more than the price of the book. Incidentally, did you also get the original of THE EPITOME LOCATION? Just curious. HL

The Classic Collection is not just the old books bundled together in one big book! Aside from the updates and new material, the book has HUNDREDS of photos to help you learn the routines.
The old books might be less expensive, but for a few dollars more you can get a greatly improved product. I guess if you were really strapped for cash the old books might be a way to go, but, if money is THAT tight, maybe magic books should be less of a priority than other things, like food, bills, etc. |

Always go with the advice of a Professional. If Harry says the Classic Collection is the way to go, then it is. Who would know better????

Another reason to go with The Classic Collection II when it comes out:
Afterthoughts, Reputation Makers, and Rim Shots are all way out of print, and can only be found on the used book market--usually with pretty big markups. I think I paid close to $200 altogether for mint first editions of those books when I started rebuilding my library. After you pay that much for antique books you wind up wanting to keep them mint--which makes it a little hard to study them the way they deserve. When The Classic Collection II comes out, you can just worry about learning from it, instead of protecting it.

MagicSteve,
You are going the perfect route in having Harry Lorayne as your teacher; his writing style makes you feel as though he IS right across the table from you. I have all of his books except one, and that book will be in CC v2. Even though I have all three of the Best of Friends series, I wish Mr. Lorayne would think about having volume II reprinted. It's an EXCELLENT book of course, and one that in my opinion needs to be in the hands of those who missed it first time around. Actually, I was one of those people. On a lark I called my dealer about this book seven years ago, and he had exactly one copy left! Linking Links by Sol Stone alone is worth the price of the book. Actually, to generate interest to get this reprinted, here are SOME of the contributors to volume II: Mike Gallo, Peter Marshall, The Café's own Jonathan Townsend, Randy Tanner, Louis Falanga, Bob King, Bob Farmer, Mike Bornstein, J.K. Hartman, Curtis Kam, Nick Pudar, Dr. Ken Krenzel, Meir Yedid, Dan Garrett, Dr. Michael Rubinstein, Richard Vollmer, Charles Hudson, Stephen Minch, Marlo, Max Maven, Tom Craven, Jean-Jacques Sanvert, and more! Sort of reads like a magic version lineup of the 1927 Yankees Glad you fell in love with Apocalypse. I guarantee that you will always turn to this set time and again. My volumes are so well "loved" that I think I need to order an additional set from Mr. Lorayne soon. I DO take extremely good care of my books, but these accompany me everywhere and in a personal library of about 3,000 books, are my mainstays. When I am touring as a musician, I bring clothes, hygiene necessities, my keyboards of course, and Apocalypse along with cards and coins. And the best part is, unlike groupies, Apocalypse has CLASS One more thing: Nobody has mentioned The Himber Wallet Book. I believe this to be THE definitive work on this great utility. Buy it, read it, learn it, love it, live it. That for me encapsulates my feelings about ALL of Harry Lorayne's work. Best, Vlad |

And if you want to remember how to do all those HL effects you might want to get Ageless Memory, another Harry Lorayne book. I've got it and it's a great read with techniques on how to remember anything.
