I was wondering if anybody out there has any good hat lines?
Here is one that I use sometimes:- Here's my gypsy blessing tonight the money you give I'll hold tight and the karma for you will be steadfast and true, and enrich you and make it alright Within one day's time you will see some cash coming to you for free and if when you count, it's not triple amount (indicate hat again) come do double or nothing with me. |

Hi Frank,
If you search the first year archives you will find a slew of them. There was a pretty big thread on this a while back. Best, dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! I've worked at a Ren Festival for a number of years and have seen a lot of hat pass stategies, from outrageously funny to-not so much.
In a conversation with a VERY successful act offstage they said their hats increased dramatically when they changed their approach 180 degrees. Instead of funny they realized that since most people take their money seriously a more honest acknowledgement of their purpose as entertainers and the audiences power to choose to give, or if they were unable to for financial reasons, to simply not worry about it, seemed to have a very powerful effect on those individuals that were on the fence. It had a "Oh what the &***, it's just a couple of bucks and these fellas did work hard and put on a good show..." sort of bounce to it. Maybe sometimes giving people the power and permisson not to tip allows them and you to relax and then... In these TOUGH economic times just a thought. Two things to add 1. These guys were REALLY good and probably would have gotten decent hats either way. And 2. I could be wrong. Best, Jim |

I think hat lines are very important... you can be great and have them walk away... but if you can pull at their hearts... important... it makes a big difference... and make them laugh.... I hate it when people walk away.... and it's tough to stop it... you can never completely stop it but you can limit it by what you say... not just at the end of your show but throughout your show... It makes a BIG difference...
I think I could do a video just on hat lines... no kidding and the theory that different performers use ....good stuff, I think.... |

Go for it Koz!
The strategy of embedding the hat line through out the performance, without making it sound like money grab, is key to filling the hat with some degree of consistency! And it would be great to see a series of different straegies, and the logic behind them. So what are you waiting for Koz? BroDavid

Couple weeks ago, I saw the act "Two's a Crowd." They were the two guys in Cellini's street peforming video who wore matching orange bowler hats. They do a comedy/dance show. They had about two hundred people around them. They were great, had the crowd completely in the palm of their hands. And--this is an interesting point--they collected their money *before* their finale. And, of course, the audience thought it was great fun. They were laughing the whole time they were handing out their money.

Oh, my friend we're older but no wiser, for in our hearts the dreams are still the same...
