I recently bought a Zippo to use in my walk around. I filled it all the way but found that in a matter of days, even with no use, it won't light and needs to be filled again. I contacted Zippo about this and they said a Zippo will only hold fluid for about four days before needing refueling. Is this correct as I don't remember my roomate in college filling his zippo that much and he used it all the time. If this is true I may have to look into a different lighter as I'm using it once a week in my walk around gig and even though the fluid is cheap it just doesn't seem reasonable to have to refill it every week if a butane or other diffent type can hold fluid longer. Can anyone else who uses a zippo regularly tell me how long they can uses theirs before needing to be refilled.

Wow, I don't personally have a Zippo, but I can remember back when my Dad smoked and had one. It seemed his lasted a month or more before he needed to refill it. I wonder if maybe they changed the material they use to hold the fluid ?

You may not be filling it all the way up. I have a few zippos and they stay fueled for at least a week, usually longer.
anyway, be patient when youre filling it. you need to let the fluid soak into the cotton for a few seconds then resaturate it. repeat that until fluid starts to drip off the wick. then its full. |

I have been filling it until it drips out the wick. In fact once I accidentally over filled it a little as it had a small pool of fluid over the cotton. It still went dry with in a matter of days. Anyone else had similar experiences or is mine defective and Zippo doesn't want to admit it?

Buy a BIC lighter, they are cleaner, will last longer, and you will not need to mess with smelly fluids.
Plus, if you are so inclined, the BIC can be used for a paddle effect. |

The only explanation for your problem that I can think of is that they just stuffed your lighter with too much cotton. this would leave less room for fluid. you could try taking the cotton out, removing some of it, and re-stuffing the lighter. if that dosent work, I'm stumped.
also, zippos are both classier and better for landfills than bics. I think you just ended up with a funky zippo. |

I have and use a zippo for its classier look when fire breathing etc. The lid on it has been bent ever so slightly which causes it to dry out a lot faster than it used to. Check the lid and make sure you are pushing it in the casing properly, if the lid is anything but closed it will dry up real fast!

How long do you normally get on a properly working zippo? Wanted to know, as from your responses I feel Zippo is trying to get out of replacing apparently defective one.

I have no idea if your lighter's defective or if it's normal for it to only last a few days. But if it is normal, you could try storing the lighter in an air-tight zip-lock bag when not needed, presumably this will help stop the fuel from evaporating.
Just don't open the bag near any naked flames! |

I have carried a Zippo for eight years in Florida and yes mine goes dry about once a week. Remember the fluid contains Naptha. The fuel evaporates quickly. Zippo has repaired lighters I have collected from flea markets and antique shops for just a few dollars. I have found that Zippo lighters add a touch of class with their sound and shape. They have a huge variety of markings too.Card magicians may like the lighters with Aces on them.

Yeah I haven't used mine in ages but a Zippo lasts about a week depending on
usage. It definitely has a certain-something that a bic just doesn't have. But a bic definitely has it's pluses as well... |
