Greetings,
I just wanted to mention that I will be lecturing in New York City at Fantasma on Tuesday, July 15th at 7:00. The details can be found here: http://www.fantasmamagic.com/nycstore/nycstore_lectures.html Even though I have lectured in more than 30 different states over the past six years, this will be my very first lecture in New York City, and I am really looking forward to it. Then, I will be heading out to Long Island to lecture at Ronjo’s on July 16th. That lecture is also scheduled for 7:00, and you can get more info here: http://ronjo.com/blog/241.html I lectured at Ronjo’s a number of years ago and I had a great time--but for those that may have seen me on Long Island back then, this is a completely new lecture. I will be teaching a number of my signature pieces, and there are even a few unpublished items that I will be sharing as well. For several reasons, I have been spending very little time lecturing as of late, and I will probably be cutting back even more in the coming months. With that said, I hope to see a number of folks when I visit New York next week. Thanks very much, and take care everyone. Keep the change, Rick Maue Deceptions Unlimited |

Hello friends,
Rick's lecture last night was another great time! We had him here six years ago. Wow could it really be that long?! I am getting old. By chance alone that last lecture was on July 16th, the anniversary of the death of Rick's friend, musician Harry Chapin About three months ago I heard through the grapevine that Rick released a new set of lecture notes so you know we had to get him back here for you guys (and for us). Our window of time to have him here was to be the middle of this July. Either the 15th, 16th or 17th. Now I had forgotten all about Rick's connection with Chapin. Let alone what time of year we had him the last time. The center date was chosen by Rick by his choice but you gotta admit even for mentailst, that's pretty freaky! Now Rick hasn't really traveled much lately. And he isn't on a lecture tour now. His eight hour plus drive to get here shows his love and commitment for his craft. He did make one stop along the way in NYC to try to make it worthwhile with gas & time and such but that deal fell through. Poor Rick. (Sorry that happened to you Rick). Rick arrived early yesterday with his friend, multi talented artist Eric Starkey and hung out for a bit before going to the hotel for a little R&R before showtime. Now it's lecture time. Rick wowed all of us with his fantastic new effects. His routines are so involved, it's not easy for me to describe them. They all have layers and multiple builds. His effects were brilliant. His props innocent. His attention to detail during set up, performance, visually, audibly, psychologically & clean up are very very deep in theory. This is the stuff I love. the secrets are almost meaningless. The methods themselves for everything he did were very simple. I've always said simple & straight forward is the way to go. His effects are so easy that everyone who see's him can and will learn them. So we know everyone who attended last night came away learning some great material. Now you guys have to focus on your presentation to pull them off correctly. He started with "Group Dynamic" a killer four person routine in which a lot happens he finds the one person in the group in a random chair holding a random piece of paper that was randomly selected that matches his prediction. As a semi-professional Poker player, I was really looking forward to seeing "Subconscious Poker." This is a brilliant piece that I am going to use all the time. I just knew the cards had to be marked when I was watching him (juice?). Um, you can do this with a borrowed deck. Boy was I fooled! "Fate" another four person routine with multiple revelations of what color poker chips they will be holding (while wrapped in tinfoil), what would be left over and where in the room these people decided to stand. WOW!!!! This was my favorite routine. He did several other great things and then he closed the lecture with the opening of his live show. This opening effect was to be a performance piece only to teach us how Rick addresses an audience. As he puts it, "to get them on my side." Very important material. He did not set out to disclose the secret on this one. As Rick told us this effect, Heads & Tales was about teaching something more important than a secret. Rick told us that this effect was the only effect he did that he really liked. So you can see why he wants to keep at least one of his secrets to himself. I think he is being too critical of himself because all of his effects are truly fantastic. But I do understand where he is coming from because I used to be in a band and we wrote about 40 songs, a rather large following and I only truly liked one of our songs. So.... Anyway Rick was having such a good time with our gang that he decided to be extra generous and he taught us his prized opening effect. And yes Rick it is a fooler. I hope anyone who saw Rick last night will respect him by never doing this effect. If you must do it, change the effect. You all know the method, you will have no trouble coming up with original material to present it differently. After the show we all went out to the local dinner for a bite. I had to jet early as I was so tired from getting no sleep the night before & working all day. And when I say early, I think it was after midnight when the waiter took our order. So anyway Rick we all had a great time. Thanks again for coming out and sharing with us. Too bad you live so far away. I know that our whole group could be good friends. We can't wait to have you back. And if I ever find my self out by you, we'll try to say hi. For those of you interested, we'll be adding the entire Deceptions Unlimited collection entire line to our website in the near future. Thanks for reading! Until next time, Pete |

Greetings,
I just wanted to say thanks to Pete for the great words about my lecture. I have to be honest and say that Ronjo's is one of my favorite places in the world to lecture. First, it is out on Long Island, which I love (I still miss you Harry), and second, the guys up there are among the best in the magic business. There is nothing like a magic shop that honestly cares about our art form--and believe me, the folks at Ronjo's are simply great. Those that know me are aware that I always encourage people to support all brick and mortar magic shops--but really special places like Ronjo's, Denny & Lee's, and Midwest Magic are more than just shops: they are the heart that beats inside of those that truly love magic. All I can say is show them your thanks by supporting them. And Pete, whenever you want another lecture, or a workshop of any type, you just say the word my friend. I am always up for a trip to Ronjo's. Keep the change, Rick |

I am so mad that I missed this. From now on I am going to keep up with who is doing lectures here in NY.
I hope you come back to NY sometime soon Rick. |
