There nothing like live magic, and yet, curiously, my favourite magician is Ricky Jay, who I have only ever seen on film.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Bet if you could see him live, it would all make sense...

Thinking about it as we speak. I did go and see my favourite film actor perform live in a play, and I wasn’t too impressed with his performance...but I am sure Ricky Jay wouldn’t be such a disappointment. I have seen some great live performances of magic and can't understand why Ricky Jay springs to my mind when someone asks me who is my favourite magician, since he has never given me the same great feeling from film as I get when seeing a live performance.

Tommy, some film actors could not ever cut it on the stage. You can't have multiple takes of the same line on stage, and you can't wait until you "feel it" before you go on.
I believe it was Walter Matthau that said this about acting: "Acting on stage is like playing chess, acting on film is like playing checkers, and acting on TV is like playing tiddlywinks." Greg
One of my favorite quotes: "A critic is a legless man who teaches running."

And acting for a camera is as if 2 million people turned up and all sat in the same seat!
Or, my favourite: "Theatre is art, film is entertainment, TV is furniture."

I was in the audience when Bob Kohler performed/lectured at the McMillan International Magic convention in London, 2001. He finished with his Golden Shells routine. It was possibly the best thing I've ever seen! Luckily, I was quite new to magic and could experience it almost like a layman.
Jerry Sadowitz is also great; words cannot do his skill (both as a showman and a card man) justice...! Cheers, John |

I'd agree that live magic is fantastic compared to film or TV, especially when you have a true master on the stage who can draw the audience into a state of illusion and mystery. That dynamic of the entire audience being drawn in is so powerful. People like Harry Blackstone, Jr., Johnny Thompson, Tony Slydini, Eugene Burger, and Max Maven drew the audience into the mystery so well. Once that psychological state is reached in the audience dynamic, then it goes beyond tricks; it becomes that suspension of belief in reality that marks true magic.

The first time I saw Ricky Jay was a groundbreaking TV series of dark entertainment, The Secret Cabaret, about 20 years ago. That was great series and the best TV show in my opinion, the best thing that has ever been on TV. Simon Drake and others put on just loads of just great magic. These shows were proper, serious magic, not like the light stuff that we had been used to seeing on TV. Ricky Jay had a lot of input into it, I have read since. Being a card guy, I just thought Ricky was best I had ever seen and just liked him as a character straight away. It was the first cool TV series on magic. TV is never as good, but it can be good nonetheless. I have almost gone off TV magic in recent years.

I remember seeing Ricky in NYC, and it was great!
I also remember seeing Robert De Niro on B'way in Cuba and His Teddy Bear, which was excellent! |

Magic is like music.
When you experience it live it makes all the difference in the world.
