Man, I can't get over what my brother just told me.
Seems my sister was doing her usual yard sales today. In her jeep, and she was about to turn down an alley, when she saw some guy waving his arms frantically and yelling Stop!!! Stop!!! Stop!!! at the top of his lungs. He had a crazy look on his face, and my sister didn't know what to think...maybe the guy was mental?? Well, she stopped. And she saved her life. Because there was some pin head meth dealer, and he was going probably 80, and he went through the alley and there was also a COP going 80 chasing him down the alley! Now if she had not listened to the crazy man, (an angel?) She would have been T-boned in that jeep at 80 miles per hour.... I don't know why cops think it's alright to do this..(What if there had been a small child in the alley???) but I am sure thankful that I am not attending a loved one's funeral tomorrow. Just thought you'd find this interesting reading.

The police will stop a 'chase' if they feel it is unsafe, do it all the time. I'm impressed by her ability to judge speed and determine the drug usage of the driver, durn him. Glad she didn't get hit, that would suck.

Different cities have different policies about high speed chases, too. The ones that permit them, the rationale is that on balance, it's more risky to let the guy get away. Glad she was ok!

Here's another scenario to think about Doug concerning law enforcement / high speed chases.
What if the guy had just robbed your sister and shot her during the course of the robbery to get Meth money and had carjacked her Jeep. Makes a little more sense for the police to pursue and make every effort to aprehend the suspect when the crime hits a little closer to home doesn't it? Lyndel |

Believe me, this already does hit close to home. That's my sis.
But I still can't shake the image of a small child innocently playing in that alley...

There was no accident, there was no child, you don't know the speed of the cars, you don't know the guy was a 'meth head'. No harm no foul, move on.
I've news for you, I saw a child get hit by a car, a car in front of me, and the little boy was killed. There was no speeding involved, no violations by the driver at all, just a kid who was holding his brothers hand and let it go rather than holding it and the lil' guy ran into the path of the car. That is a reality and a horrible situation, you are stuck in a fantasy 'what if'. Oh, what if a childrens chior was practicing in the 'alley'? Oh my! What if there was a parade and all the children in town were marching at that moment! Dearie me! I would suggest forgetting it and relaxing. |

You don't know what he doesn't know. Doug's concerns are legit. You move on.

A kid could have been killed during the pursuit, or it could have been the case that the cops caught the guy and locked him up, thereby saving a kid that could have been killed by the pinhead meth dealer if he'd been let get away. I'm kind of in favor of going after him when you know where he is. Plus, cities that have announced policies against high speed pursuits really incentive the next pinhead. If the cops pull you over for something serious, and you know they don't go those pursuits because of "kids in alleys," you have every reason in the world to gun it up to 80 and take off down a residential street.

I agree. But, as a parent, I don't care for the way Santa writes it off as a non-issue.

Since there was no kid in the area how is it an issue? You could just as well say "a buffalo could have been in the alley!" and it would be just as real as the situation was. When I saw that little boy killed it was a situation where no one was wrong, it was a little boy excited that his grandfather was visiting and the family was waiting for a green cross light. That wasn't a fantasy for that family, that kid is really dead to this day. Which, by the way, should be a note to you lazy parents who don't use crosswalks, you are teaching kids to not be careful.

I went looking for shocking death statistics to throw back at Santa. Unfortunately for my argument (but good for us), here are some numbers from AAA:
Quote:
...approximately 1% to 3% of pursuits end in death, 5% to 24% end in injuries, 18% to 44% end in accidents, and 68% to 82% end in an arrest. Contrary to popular images, ...(9% to 30%) of pursuits are initiated for felony crimes; the majority (between 52% and 63%) of pursuits are initiated by the police for a traffic violation. These are the numbers including those involved. I can't vouch for the bad guy, but the cops probably would have avoided her or a child's demise.

The last couple deaths I've heard about involving chases happened after the police had ended the pursuit because of concerns about public safety. One was the driver who kept going and hit a tree and the other, in Oakland, a teen was hit by the driver some time after the chase ended on the polices part. Since in this case it was an imaginary child just use imaginary statistics, so many do you know.

Doug, glad your sister is ok, and I'm glad that guy was alert.

I had a similar incident as far as trusting someone was concerned. My wife and I were walking down 3rd Ave. when we heard a voice; "Hey, HEY!" Look to our left and there's a guy in a doorway; "C'mere." "Um, I don't think so." "No, no. Over there!" He points to our right and there's a guy behind a parked car, facing the buildings across the street with a drawn gun! (My street smarts aren't what they should be, that's one of the reasons I don't live in NYC anymore.)
Turns out it was a cop and they'd chased an armed suspect into the building across the street.

Heck, I was in the middle of a police shooting and didn't realize what was going on until the guy was dead. I sat in the car thinking "gee, that sounds just like a .45 going off....interesting".
Man...today I had a car miss me going at around 70, I was going 65, by about two and a half feet! No kidding, then the next car missed me by the same amount! I then turned off our one lane highway and was safe. |

Update: I saw a copy of the Tribune laying around today, and there it was on the front page...the entire story.
As I read it I found out that the chase ended in a collision. The pinhe....er, I mean "gentleman" who was doing the meth ended the chase as he broadsided someone's van... on a public street, seriously injuring the occupant and himself getting only a sore neck. Hell of a nice guy. Anyway I talked to some people at work today about my sister, and all three said the same thing. They said "What if there was a kid playing in the alley?" Seems great minds think alike...
