Two sides to every coin (well, except certain ones we discuss on these forums...)
On one hand, yes- cops shouldn't endanger civilians with high speed pursuits. But most people are sane enough to stop when the lights start flashing behind them. Was there any mention in the Tribune of why the police were chasing the suspect? On the other hand, when I hear people clamoring to stop all high speed pursuits, well, come on- if that was the case, how many people would just take off whenever a cop tried to pull them over for speeding? Or- "Gee Bob, that multiple murderer just started driving away! Guess we gotta let him go..." Is it the fault of the cop, or the guy running from the cop? When someone doesn't pull over, cops usually assume the suspect has a reason to not want to be pulled over (warrant out for them, hiding contraband, etc.) I tend towards blaming the suspect, but there aren't any black-and-white answers to complex problems. I'm glad your sister's all right.

Yes, the Trib mentioned the fact that the guy (22 years old) was dealing drugs.

Gee, I thought it was bad that my wife and I were broadsided by a drunk driver running a stop sign. Now I see it wasn't really so bad because there was no police pursuit.
What seems to have been lost is that there was a reason for the pursuit and that there was no child playing in the alley. Hell, there appears to be more concern for the non-existent child than the guy who really got hit.

What "IF" the meth head got away due to the police stopping the chase and he went on a drug induced rampage at a elementary school and killed 50 children with a machete?
There are many what ifs and the police should chase down all people who run. The real problem is some liberal judge will accept the "my mommy fed me to much oatmeal when I was you so that is why I am a meth user and ran from the police" defense and sentence him to 15 minutes in jail. The penalty for running from the police should be 25 years as many people are put at risk due to their actions and as death could result the should be charged with attempted murder. F'em and feed them beans. NUMS |

Firstly, glad your sister is OK and I hope the guy that did get hit is OK as well.
Secondly, the disease of our era. We are unable to isolate the problem and address it and therefore reason about rubbish. It was not the cops who endangered anyone. It was the guy being chased. No point in arguing. |

She's OK cuz she didn't get hit! Good god.... next some of you will be starting a fund for the imaginary child.
I've a stupid question and I don't want to look it up cuz I know the 'man' is watching. I am not a druggie and see meth meth meth (that is almost as cool as being ADD) all over the place on the news, must be very sexy. I know that it is speed of some sorts and I think they make it with cold pills or something but how do people take it? Is it injected or smoked (I've seen crack pipes on TV) or snorted? I've never seen meth and wouldn't know it if it fell out of the sky. I don't understand crack either except it looks like salt chunks and they smoke it in pretty much anything. |

Google is your friend.* Check the bottom section of the sidebar- "Routes". It can be taken pretty much any way possible, most of which have different absorption rates.
You're right- the current restriction on buying large amounts of cold medicine is directly due to the fact that it can be created from ephedrine or pseudoephedrine. But don't try it. The stuff is scary bad nasty, and hyperstimulates your neural reward pathways to the point of destruction- as in, you are no longer physically capable of receiving pleasure from pretty much anything but meth. And the creation process is also incredibly, potentially explosively dangerous. Really, I only know this stuff coz I googled it. It's not firsthand experience. * And, honestly, there's a ton of legit reasons to look it up, so don't fear "the man". Hell, if you've ever searched for stage illusions, you've probably incurred more notice. "Why's that freak looking up 'guillotine blade stocks'?..."

Dang, so they become like zombies who just want meth huh? That sucks. I wouldn't suggest people take it. I can't take the stuff that has what they make it with in it so I never noticed the cold stuff was off the shelves until the other day when I noticed a sign saying they had to get the stuff behind the counter.

Concern for community safety, does not necessarily involve blaming anyone. I am not mourning invisible children. Would a cop mock the dangers involved in a high speed chase through a neighborhood? The trade offs are acknowledged by everyone, including the police. There was never a call to end police pursuits. As a parent and caring human being, even the thought of someone else losing a child causes me concern. Children are small and often distracted. If one grew up by an ally, there is a chance they might be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
As for the notion of people being concerned about gun fire and stray bullets in a neighborhood, I think that is a valid concern as well.

There have been calls to end police pursuits, including successful ones (successful calls, that is, not chases). Some law enforcement entities have "no chase" policies, and others don't.
