I wanted to let everyone now that Hocus Pocus now has my lastest effect: Random Thoughts. The routine and handling has been approved since the original announcement on the Café. This is the item I'm currently closing my mental show with. One of the strongest predictions I've devised in my opinion.
Here is the blog for the effect: RANDOM THOUGHTS by Devin Knight Effect: The performer says he has made a prediction. It is a prediction dealing with then totally random actions that apparently no one could control. During the presentation every choice made appears to be completely random. Despite this, the mentalist has correctly predicted the outcome! The routine starts with the performer showing a small manila envelope. He says this contains a prediction. The envelope is placed in FULL VIEW before the effect begins. It never leaves the sight of the audience and is never secretly switched. A spectator is selected at random to participate in the presentation. A newspaper is shown to the participant and several double sheets are removed and placed on a table. The participant is asked to select a sheet of newspaper. The performer says he will tear that sheet of paper into pieces. Before he does he will have the participant choose a number. To ensure the number is totally random, the number will be chosen by rolling a pair of ordinary dice. To make it interesting the spectator will USE THE UNSEEN NUMBERS ON THE BOTTOM OF THE DICE. Afterwards the spectator will count down into the stack of torn papers and take the torn piece at that number. The performer then proceeds to tear the newspaper into pieces. He puts the stack of papers on the table next to the envelope containing the prediction. Only then does he ask the participant to tell the audience his chosen number. The participant, NOT THE PERFORMER then counts down into the stack and takes the piece of paper at his chosen number. The performer then tells the participant there are two sides to the piece of paper he is holding. Both sides contain different information. The participant chooses one side to read. Again the choice is his with no force used. The performer points out that no one could have known in advance WHICH side of the paper the person would choose to read. Both sides contain print so the choice is completely free. The performer again calls attention to the envelope. He very cleanly opens it and dumps out the contents, a single index card. The performer doesn't touch the index card and the envelope is shown to be empty. The performer asks the participant to look at his chosen side of the paper. He is asked if he spots any unique words in the article. He is to look for words that are names of towns, names of people, phone numbers, names of companies, etc. Words that would be unique to that article and would only be found on that side of the paper. Once he has found words like this he is to read them aloud to the audience. The participant is asked to pick up the index card and look at the other side. Written on the index card in BOLD LETTERS are the random words the participant just called out! There are no nail writers used. There is no secret writing done at any time. No Switch of predictions either. The prediction card is in FULL VIEW before the participant reads random words on the torn piece. The performer never touches the index card once it is on the table. Despite all these conditions the prediction is 100% correct! This effect is strong enough to close a show. As far as predictions go, few things can follow it. It seems like a miracle. NO DUPLICATE PIECES, NO COMPLEX FORMULAS, NO SPECIALLY PRINTED NEWSPAPERS. Use any borrowed newspaper. No sleights. Dice are ungimmicked. Comes complete with everything you need to do the effect including envelopes and dice. You provide the newspaper. Includes 27 pages of fully illustrated directions covering every detail and nuance of this effect. |

This sounds very nice. I'm supprised nobody has said anything yet. I'm waiting for mine to arrive. I will be busy moving though so probably won't have much time to get into it. Looking forward to hearing more about it!

Any way to sreamline this? I would loose half the audience before the end. Perhaps a much more experienced performer could keep them but I am reading Ken Weber's Maximum Entertainment and trying to follow his lead:)

Guys this actually plays a lot faster than it reads. I currently use it to close my mental act and it always goes over well. This routine isn't a quickie, its a show piece that has substances and builds to an impossible appearing climax. It is best suited for experienced performers.

A quick comment...
I have read the description of the effect and I have some idea on how this could work (however, knowing that Devin is a bright, smart ***, I could be way off ) but if it is something like I have envisioned, then this is neither convoluted nor time consuming when I visualize it played out in real time performance. It's only the (detailed) description that makes it seem so - but, again, I definitely can imagine it play really smooth and easy before a real audience. Just my thoughts...
Then you'll rise right before my eyes, on wings that fill the sky, like a phoenix rising!

I just read through this and it is really great! Great because it is not at all as complicated as it seemed at first glance and as some were worried about. And as far as pacing is concerned;it doesn't have to take forever to tear the paper. Plus a little humor in a good script and it'll be a breeze...ending in a quick blast of tornado strenth impossibility. very cool
