When performing a show do you think you need a hand microphone or not? I have a lapel microphone. So I was wondering for when someone comes up on stage do you think you should have one or not.

The answer depends upon YOU circumstance, and not anyone else's. This may seem like an obvious answer, Mike, but if the audience can't hear the volunteer well-enough, then you need to mic the volunteer, or change the routine such that YOU repeat the volunteer's lines, or change the routine such that the volunteer doesn't need to speak.
Some performers, like many mentalists, use a handheld mic, because it helps them to ensure the volunteer ONLY speaks when the performer WANTS the volunteer to speak, by conditioning the volunteer to speak ONLY when the mic is pointing at him. Cheers from Toronto!
