Disappearing objects/self/woman/man/large cats/doves; objects/self through object; changing color; great escape; fire.

Well I think if we're thinking attention getting effects and such, it's going to need to be something visual and eye catching. If your meaning what I think as far as their walking by and you want them to almost see it out of the corner of their eyes and react/stop. Flash paper, and other flashy things of that nature if it happens to go with your style.

But I guess if people are already watching then a good attention getter is going to be something like the levitations previously suggested, or a good transposition of two objects in some way, like the cups and balls or two cards changing places in a "here then there" type routine.

Just look through what you know and find the ones you like the most and that have gotten the best reactions/looks.

Also, I say if their just walking by and your standing, you might need a bit of verbal to get the initial look, and then they see you doing whatever and that's the visual. Sometimes you will need both, and sometimes just the visual will be enough. I guess a verbal invite Might get some people over, but then you still have to do something to keep them.

If I can assume you are in a outdoor space, since you are "trying to get a crowd's attention", then don't think of a "flashy trick" but think in terms of commanding the attention of the space -- taking control.

For example: In a loud voice (think "Ringmaster in a Circus" )

"Ladies and Gentlemen! If you would for a moment <pause>
Suspend you belief in SCIENCE <pause>
Metaphysics <pause>
Psychic-pseudo-Metaphysics <pause>
and THAT which is the Penultimate of Scientific Investigation.<long pause>

In exchange for the Cosmic Dance of the Juggler <pause>
The Illusion of the Magician <pause>
The Dexterity of the Pres-tidigitator <long pause>

Ladies and Gentlemen <pause> ITS MAGIC TIME!"

By that time you will have everybody's attention and all you have to do then is to keep it. It best to follow up with something truly killer.

Write your opener to fit your act and style. Remember your opener (you) should command the space. Your being BOLD. Your first effect should be equally BOLD.

Good Luck
Just Some Guy.

Verbal versus Visual. I will give both a try to see what fits me best as the most comfortable and strongest opener.

Its a combination of BOTH. The Opening spiel get everyone looking at you (Your attention getter) and its your PROMISE that there is something interesting to see. now, you have to fullfill the PROMISE to keep the attention of the audience.

I used the above opener 30 years ago when I was in college and we'd work parks and fairs. You should use a Big theatrical voice (from the diaphragm). There should be a rhythm to it. I used to juggle when I used it.

Best Regards
Just Some Guy.

By adding up all your comments, the 3 V's is the answer. "Vocal, Visual and Verbal."

My #1 attention getter is the Jim Pace flaming business card wallet. People LOVE fire! After a show I'll have people walk up to me and say "can I have one of your burning cards?"
