A couple of functional issues... The header is too tall. Basically, with my browser open 100%, the content is Below the Fold, which means, when I click on the nav buttons, it appears that nothing happens.
It could make a prospective booker go to the next site. Not sure what purpose the photo bar on the bottom is supposed to serve. Graphically it LOOKS terrific. Just fix those few lay out functional issues and it is a winning site.
Leaping Lizards!!! Who knew it was possible.

Leaping Lizards, A few people have mentioned this to me actually. I have talked to my webmaster about it but not sure how to deal with it quite yet with out doing a major over haul on the site. Will have to see what can be done with out re-designing too much.
Thanks for pointing it out though...

Keir,
A couple of thoughts... Black background with white lettering is hard to read and the point size needs to be increased. How about some audience reaction shots instead of staged studio shots? Stronger benefit copy... Remember it's You, You, You - The Customer not I, I, I - The Entertainer. What's my ROI on hiring you? I'd suggest reading all of Jeffery Gitomer's books. You will find them great help. You mention Motivational Speaker yet have no testimonials on speaking I could find. If you want to truly succeed in the market it is better to be a speaker who uses magic than a magician that speaks. Fees are much higher. In your copy you mention college campuses. I don't know if I'd want my corporate acct. thinking I was a college market speaker. I personally would suggest seperate sites for Corporate Magician & Motivational Speaker. This way you position yourself as a specialist instead of`a generalist. I'd suggest reading Joe Callaway's book, "A Category Of One!" You will find it helpful. I, in no way, mean to be critical. Only trying to help you see what a LOT of web designers and entertainer's DON'T. All the best! John Cooper |

Keir! Nice to see you.
A couple of things I noticed: Yes, the header is way too big, and squeezes out the content below it. I'd look at trying to move the header stuff to the left 1/3 of the screen, so the page content takes up the right 2/3. Does that make sense? This is basically how my soon-to-be-updated website is handling it. I'm old (40 this year!) and think maybe you should bump the font size up a notch or two. The "Keir performs throughout the US – Alabama Arizona ...." list makes for dead space at the bottom of each page. I now it's there to catch the search engines, but unfortunately it *looks* like it's there to catch the search engines, and doesn't tell visitors to the site anything you can't state to them directly and economically. Just my two cents. Hope all is well with you! Rory

I have my webmaster on some of your ideas Rory as well as making the header smaller on pages other than the home page as "Leaping Lizards" suggested. John, some of your ideas may take a little longer to implement as you are talking about creating a new website etc. It is all I can do to get this one cleaned up as it is. : ) Hopefully down the road your ideas will come into play though...

OK I just had most of the changes that had been brought up to me fixed so if you (you meaning anyone really) would, go back and check it out again and see if anything else jumps out at you and or if this looks better with the ideas suggested above.
Thanks, Keir http://www.lifeismagical.com

Hi Keir
The gallery that appears at the start has clickable photos (the pointer changes to a hand indicating that it's clickable) but nothing happens when you click on them. The huge list of links at the bottom of each page totally annoying. I can see that this will help with web search results. To me it just comes across as pointless, desperate and a bit unprofessional. I like the general feel of it though, but I hate scrolling down to see the rest of the page. Can't you put the content in a scrollable window? Derek |

Hey Keir,
Your new site projects a very professional image and your designer did a great job. I don't need to repeat anything that was mentioned above but overall I like it a lot! You've raised the bar for all of us in Colorado |

Derek, I have asked my webmaster about moving or removing the "city/state links" but he has discouraged this as he fears it will mess with my optimization. All I can really do is ask his opinion and go with that as my knowledge of the inner workings of Google etc. are not that intense. That having been said a lot of people have commented on them negatively so it is something yet to consider for the future.
I can look into the scrolling box idea also, you are the first person to mention this as a problem, yet I agree that especially on a home page it is nice to have the content all in one "view" with no need to scroll down. Will see what my webmaster can do about the photo gallery issue. ************* Michael, your site looks great as well (you are part of the reason I had to "keep up with the Joneses' " you know). Not so long ago there was zero internet competition for a magician in Denver and lately several magicians have moved into town (all whom have good websites) and it is a lot tighter than it was just a couple of years ago. Thanks to all who have posted... Keir

You may want to reconsider those city/state specific pages. They are a technique known as "doorway pages".
According to Google, "Doorway pages are typically large sets of poor-quality pages where each page is optimized for a specific keyword or phrase." Here's Google's position on them: "Google may take action on doorway sites and other sites making use of these deceptive practice, including removing these sites from the Google index." (Source for Google info: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters......c=15263) So, those pages may help you, or they may hurt you. You'll have to decide whether it's worth the risk. -Brad |

Hi Keir,
There are a lot of great comments here for you to think about. I did like your website and I only have one thing to ad. It may help you to load your demo video onto YouTube and then embed the video onto your site. This way YouTube is the one paying(Bandwidth) for your clients to see your video. Also people on YouTube may find your video and go to your site and book you. Fitz

As you will find, I rank pretty well. Derek |

Even with 'budget' hosting packages, you have more than enough bandwidth to host a bunch of videos at no additional expense. Additionally the bulk of the content is terrible and I wouldn't want to be associated with that. If you must use a hosted video provider, use Google Video and TheDean suggests. I would be happy to help anyone with embedding and compressing movies for the web. Bottom line, you don't want your promo material to look cheap. Keir, Thank you for your kind words. It's actually a little ironic because I, too, overhauled my website a few weeks ago and was actually about to do the same (asking for feedback) when I found your thread. |
