Hi all.

What are the steps to create, prepare and manage a tour?
How do you do to make your own show?
Is there web sites which talk about the tour management?

I would hope that Steve Daly might post here. He is currently touring, and I mean really touring, in the true sense of the word, across country, and I would think that any ideas he offered would be pretty much worth listening to. The show traveling now is called "Tricks!" and his "en route" blog is pretty good reading, both from this year and last.

FWIW,

Where is THAT blog?

There are quite a few touring pros here, but as they are "touring" they will be in and out of touch here, I'm sure.

I could be wrong about the "who", but I think I remember Keith Joseph (Spelling?) had a "Touring" course out there... if it was not him, it was someone... do a SEARCH here, it was posted HERE in The Tricky Business section.

The SEARCH function is your friend… there are also more on “touring” here at the Café…

I can't recommend Hal Galper's "The Touring Musician - A Small Business Approach to Booking Your Band on the Road" enough. When I was touring my fairs and festivals it was a HUGE help. It is very applicable to what we do as magicians.

http://www.amazon.com/Touring-Musician-B......23084299

I don't have any interest in the sales of the book, but it's a great resource.

KILLER Point brother Keith!

First, look outside of magic for more info... success is success is success!

...and I too have NOTHING to do with the resource offered and suggested (NOT that anyone said I did) as a matter of fact, I am NOT even 100% sure it was Keith Joseph who offered the info, I just THINK it was. Don’t know the man (outside of seeing him here) and have no affiliation with him, just making a recommendation.

Thanks…

Hi Emeline,

I toured with my own personal show in Asia for two years. Not currently on tour, but perhaps I could shed some light on the topic.

As far as creating a show. I knew that I'd be jumping around from city to city. As a solo act-- I had no help. So, I needed a show that was 'pack small- play big.' With the help of my good personal friend, mentor and teacher- Denny Haney-- my act was formed. A 45 minute stand up comedy styled magic act. Feauturing the classics of magic. It was very Denny inspired. Egg bag, multiplying bottles-- yada yada. For anyone who saw my show back a couple years ago- they'll notice all the beats of Denny. The horrible thing about me is that I always want to do new things. I always want to change things around drastically. Which is great, but not for touring. What I loved about the experience was I did the same 45 minutes-- for two years. Nothing changed! It became a solid hardcore set. Bored the heck out of me, but the audience was fresh everytime so it made things fun.

So, my recommendation for those considering a touring gig- get 45 minutes of material and drill it. Drill it into your mind till you hate the egg bag. Till you want to rip those wonderful Nielsen manipulation cards up. Do it till you get mad! Till you incite rage!!

Well... maybe not that far.

Point is-- you want a solid show. Once you have a solid base idea of the material you have to present, the better off you'll be infront of that audience.

As far as managing the tour- I had a personal tour manager. Finding a good one is tough work, but it makes life so much easier. If you think you have a solid show-- there are numerous guides for managers available to you. Showbusiness Weekly, Backstage, NY/LA Agent Casting guides(monthly publications) and my personal favorite, Who's who in Showbusiness offer valuabe tools to help you. Granted this will take luck, effort on your part and patience.

I hope this gives you a bit of insight,
There's tons more that I could rant about. If there's some interest in me posting more things about the touring experiece- I may do so.

All the best,
Matt
