I make a very good living performing as a full time magician making the lion share of my income from corporate events and ten weeks of shopping centres each year.

I was curious as to what percentage of the people who post here in the Tricky Business section are full time professionals? It is not that I believe that only full time professional's opinions matter but I'd like to see what percentage of the advice posted here is from practical experience rather than theoretical.

I consider myself a full timer (entertainer: Magician, juggler, DJ, musician, talent buyer...) although I went through a rough time after the divorce where I was earning some extra income with occasional Temp work. I am just coming out of the slump now.

Been a fulltimer over 26+ yrs. myself.

Fulltime defination: No other income sources other than derived from magic & speaking. My wife doesn't hold a corporate job. She's been my business partner since we married. Speaking & entertainment have been good to us. Has it been an easy road? NO WAY!

A lot of "fulltimers" have spouses that hold regular jobs (corporate type jobs). Marty Hahne said this at a convention one time and it shocked the audience as most thought the entertainer was the sole breadwinner.

All the best!

I am a full-time, professional marketer.

Magic is the core service I provide. I constantly market the heck out of it using a variety of methods.

Currently, several clients for whom I've performed have subsequently asked me to consult with them to help with their marketing. Since they're handing significant cash my way, as well as a piece of the action, I agree to let them.

This is exactly the model Joel Bauer teaches relative to working Trade Shows, and it's how he raised his positioning from a guy doing tricks to an experienced business professional who can add value in a variety of ways.

However you guys want to classify that is up to you. As for me, I think it's exactly the proper mindset in approaching my business.

I've been a full time entertainer since 1984. Magician for years, now switched over to ventriloquist. My wife was my business partner until 2 1/2 years ago, then decided she wanted her own career - thus my shift from illusions to vent. Switching to vent turned out to be a very good decision.

Nicholas asked if most people were speaking from their experience.

While I can't speak for others, I share from my practical experience when I post. If it's an untested idea or theory, I'll admit it up front. I'll even stay off of posting on threads I know little to nothing about.

I just think that's the right thing to do.

I've been full-time for 13 years. My wife quit her job as a teacher in 2000 to be a part-time business partner and more than full-time mother. By the way, as a small business owner, I work much more than 40 hours per week, so you could even say I'm an over-timer, and quickly becoming an old-timer.

Full time all my life and life making my full-time living as a legal business owner since I was 12 and my first (produced, pitched, sold and performed) theme park show, living on my own making a real living/lifestyle since I was 16. (Didn’t “HAVE TO” before that thanks to Mom & Dad! Hehehehehe!) Never really did “kid shows” (AKA; Birthday Party Shows) though I have a HUUUUGE Respect for those that can and do! Just not my acquired skill set and/or passions.

I have been all over the map as a performer/presenter and Success Solutions provider:
= Theme Park Producer/Performer/Illusionist
= Casino Showroom & Promotional Performer/Illusionist
= Hypnotist
= Corporate and Marriage Speaker/Trainer
= Game Show Host/Producer
= Wedding Event Expert & Minister (Including Pre-Marriage Trainings)
= Tradeshow and Marketing Consultant/Spokesman
= Sponsored Theater Tours, Event, Entertainment, Agent and Production Business(s)
…blah, blah, bah, blah!

Like most of us in the beginning at-least, a G.P. (General Practitioner) settling in now (Mostly) in the “Success Support” industry “speaking, teaching, preaching & nagging” around the world, though I still do live “performing” from time to time for those that know me and my old life. Just started another casino last week… (as a “Marketing” & then performance professional)

Certainly there have been ups & downs over the early years, (of course) but ALL of it a REAL World Experience And LEARNING.

Over the last 15 years or so, I have been semi-retired being full-time earner doing “Less Appearances for More Money” spending my “extra time” helping others succeed based on my ongoing experience in this (and other) business.

Not sure if that was what you were looking for and asking… "experience from with which to share HERE, based on real EXPERIENCE."

Hope that helps…

I am at your service and in HIS Service,
Deano (back) in Reno

I was a full timer in magic and ventriloquism but when the kids came along, I decided to go part time so I didn't have to travel so much.

Well the kids are now 25 and 21. 1 is out of the house and the other is half way to the door, and due to some other circumstances falling into place, I will be returning to full time in mid August. Like Tom I made the switch a few years ago to full vent (well maybe a little magic, but less every day)

All that being said - being a part timer doen't make you any less professional.

I call myself retired, but I guess I'm still a full time salesperson. I sell my businesses every day, and I sell a magic show every now and then. Would sell my wife but I’ve had her to long. Smile
