As with all TV shows AGT isn't about talent per se but selling ad space. Do talented people get through? Of course. American Idol is the same. For easy contrast in our "short attention span" world, they get the good and the bad but not many in the middle as it just muddles up the show. Most magic falls into this category. We might be great in "our world" but place magic in the mix with other show business and it just falls into the middle for both entertainment value and marketability for selling the show.

Nathan did really well last year as he had great sense when it came to creating TV moments that the producers needed. They even asked him back after he was voted off to showcase some things he pitched them.

Magicians/Illusionists tend to be a little myopic and insulated from other professional entertainers. Instead of trying to show how amazing and great we think we are, what about thinking what the producers are looking for? They need performers who can create that amazing galvanizing moment of excitement that make for great TV. Paul Potts singing Nessun Dorma on "Britain's Got Talent" was such a moment. Is it really a surprise when Neil Boyd repeated that moment on AGT? They need those moments that will cause people to tune in and vote with their time and their phones.

The winners are people we can pull for and that we want to succeed as we watch their growth over the weeks. We as a group don't fit in too well to that formula. Let's face it, the only ones more egotistical than magicians are escape artists. We magicians grin and grimace, strut and preen, then breathe like we've run a 20k marathon after doing our 90 second sub trunk. Is it any wonder we're treated as a joke? I think we need to really look at the needs of each market to define our product rather than just doing what WE want. I've done the same thing so I'm not just picking on others. After doing a lot of television, I just find how helpful it is to first, develop a good product, then try and help the producers reach THEIR goal. Then we will always be in demand.
