Yes all the time if is over a certain price...it might be worth asking the seller to put a small price on the declaration of the package

With the recent changes in US postal service pricing some of the non-delivery should be resolved UNLESS there is a customs problem on the UK side. It is good to use Paypal VERIFIED status to be able to work with non-delivery issues.

Ask your provider to put the value on the Package @ $30.00 or less that seams to be the magic no.works for me , & I have been caught out quite a few times . Good luck Kevin.

Books are VAT-exempt, and I've never had customs hold on to a package clearly marked as 'books', 'printed matter', etc. DVDs are subject to the usual rule that packages marked £18 or over are liable to be charged. I don't recommend asking companies to falsify customs forms.

Merlin is correct, don't falsify customs forms. I use to ship DVDs, books, etc and mark them as what they are, educational material then what they were, books etc.. The value can be done in different ways, one is the replacement cost for the shipper....thing is he may not want you to see his cost is $12 on a $35 book! There is also the market cost, retail cost, as long as it is verifiable. The EU has special taxes in place and those cannot be avoided.

I've ordered books and props from the USA many times and have never been charged any UK customs duty - even on big packages. But I know others who have occasionally been charged.
The general rule seems to be that if the package is delivered in the UK by Royal Mail to a private address - then you are very unlikely to be charged (there are so many packages from abroad each day that it's impossible for them to check more than a random sample). But if the package is delivered by a courier service (like DHL) then you are unlikely NOT to be charged. Under UK law, the importer (that's you, if you are buying something from an American dealer) is responsible for correctly declaring the value, not the person sending the package. If the value of the goods is found to be falsely declared the goods can be ceased and you, as the importer, can be personally prosecuted. Having said that, magic dealers routinely under declare value and declare purchases as "gifts" when they are not. I've never asked a magic dealer to make a false declaration on a customs form, and I've also never received a package from one where the declared value was not significantly below the real price. Maybe (as MagicSanta suggests) it was always the genuine cost price of the item, but I somehow doubt it. |

Move to the UK and they'll get'cha. By the way since this Jerskin fellow stuck his evil head in here. You are very funny, I am unable to recall the name of that DVD of yours I watched, wait.... New Comedy Routines for Magicians I think it was, it is really good. I saw your name the other day and thought of a guy I went to school with by the same name but he is in a mental institution (I'm not kidding) and it just struck me who you were.
If anyone wants to learn how to do a comedy routine with magic look up Gregs DVD. |

Falsifying customs information is a real no-no. It may not come down on the person who mailed the package, but the usual occurrence is that the package will be seized. Then one of four things will happen. Either the person who sent the package will not be permitted to send packages out of the country (sometimes happens, not often) OR the package will be returned to the sender after several months of delay OR you will be charged the real customs value on the goods OR the goods will be sold at auction. In any case, you will have a big delay getting your goods.
It's best to just pay the dern customse and let it go.

Typically they will re-value the item and base duties etc on that new value and they will value it as highly as possible. Not being permitted to export is done via the court system and that list is updated by the Federal Register and can be looked up, it is called The Table of Denial Orders (TDO) and consist mostly of high tech and other export fraud types.

That's true. It takes a large number of violations in a field such as ours to cause us to lose export privileges.
