The Destination Box by Jon Allen
-----------------oOo-----------------

Image

Back in September I wrote a review of Jon Allen's Spectator's Don't Exist video. One of the effects on that particular offering involved Jon performing a very nice Ambitious Card routine, in which the spectator's signed selection is found inside a small wooden box. But not just any wooden box, a very special prop called The Destination Box was used. Though Jon did explain how to construct a poor man's version of the box, it was the elegant looking wooden box that Jon actually used in the video. Smile

That said, Jon has sent me this little beauty by Air Mail, and so I thought I should share a little with the rest of you. Smile

----------------------------------------

Effect & description: The performer hands the spectator an elegant wooden box to look after for safe keeping.
The box cannot be opened, as there is a small padlocked securing the lid.
After performing his favorite signed card trick ( as the finale) the performer unlocks the box to reveal another smaller box inside, and a small bottle. The spectator is asked to choose one of the items. Let's say they pick the small box. Within this smaller box is a folded playing card. The person who signed the card carefully removes it from the box, then opens it to reveal it is their signed card!

-------------------------------------------

If you think this trick sounds good in writing, you should see this baby live!
Jon had shown me the prototype while I was in San Diego (about 3am one morning) and I was very impressed. Everyone (magicians) who saw Jon demo this wanted one, and with good reason. The effect appears to have no possible explanation and is very strong!
At the time, none of us had a clue to the method.

The Destination Box was conceived and designed by Jon himself. The box measures out at 120mm x 75mm x 55mm, and is made from American black walnut wood, has solid brass hinges, hasp & staple and comes with a padlock! The padlock is not gimmicked. Any small padlock may be used. The box is a real thing of beauty, and shines of quality, yet is so simple in design that the average spectator will never suspect that the box is indeed gaffed. If that were not enough, the box is 100% examinable! Smile

Besides the great box I just described, the kit Jon sells also includes a small round pill box, and a small glass bottle which fits inside The Destination Box. As a side note, I should also mention that you can use different items to be placed inside if you so desire, Jon simply supplies these so you can get started right away. The kit also includes a 75 minute video tape to help teach you the workings of the box, as well as showcase additional thoughts and/or ideas for your presentations. Much appreciated. Smile

The video is broadcast quality, no real bells or whistles, but does do a nice job of teaching you all you need to know.
The tape begins by explaining the history of the Card to Box plot, and the logic and reasoning that Jon used in the design process. I believe Jon has eliminated all the former problems associated with this trick. Very enlightening. Smile

Next Jon is seen performing the effect in the real world in front of real spectators, who of course have not a clue how devious and sneeky Mr. Allen really is. Smile
If you notice some of the performances seem to take place in very noisey locations, that's because they ARE! Get used to it. Those of you who perform on a regular basis will understand, those that do not will learn. Smile

Jon then goes into various routines and ideas that can be used with this wonderful box, and there are plenty, believe you me.
Just a few discussed: Signed Card to Box, Headline Prediction, Signed Bill to Box!, The Big Surprise!, Mini-Brainwave!, Just Chance!, and even a Watch Steal! Wow.

There are just so many possibilities here. Objects such as necklaces, earrings, wedding bands and more can be used. If you do decide to perform some kind of signed card effect, please know that absolutely any deck of cards can be used. This means those who work cruise ships, casinos, etc can actually use the custom printed playing cards that management might require you to use. Tablehoppers should know that reset happens in a flash, which makes this a very valuable weapon for restaurant magicians.

What more can I really say? I like this prop a lot. Even the packaging that everything comes in is first class all the way. Jon went through a lot of trouble and effort to provide plenty for your magical dollar.
Those looking for a special something to add to their acts should well consider purchasing Jon Allen's Destination Box.
I highly recommend this!
