As an eastern Pennsylvania magician, who belongs to three Pa. magic clubs. The thing that Reading is lacking is a core group of professional magicians. Eddie, and Paul are the only working pro's in the area, and the fact that the Reading club concentrates on charity gigs is just aiming too low, but you guys can beat me up on Saturday night for speaking my mind.

These guys performed all over the world not just locally. We also have a lot of Semi - pro magicians: As for myself I work at a restaurant at least 2 times a week and have all my weekends booked with shows. The reason I donate a lot of my time to charities is because I'm somewhat of a successful business owner and it makes me feel good. Pastor Mike is another one. He just told me he is booked solid for the next two months. Lovell Buchanan , heck he performed at the White House how many can say that? Well I can but I didn't get paid for it LOL Wayne is another too. So your looking at Eddy, Paul, Tom, Joe, pastor Mike, myself, Wayne, Earl, Lovell. A lot of these guys have products out too. So having over ten members in our club that doing magic is there livlihood and/or 2nd income and book solid through the year is pretty good in my eyes. Todd Kent |

Al and Ed,
I look forward to beating both of you on Saturday, did you not read I am the bouncer at Kutztown. Todd you brought up some good points. This could probably start another thread, or close this one. I am not being specific about anyone.....Just because someone calls themself a "professional" or has a website, or even makes a living with magic does not make them good. We have several magicians who are very talented, who don't perform for a living, who I would put up against some people who claim to be pro. As for me I do a little magic now and then, maybe 25 paid gigs a year, and another 5 volunteer gigs. I have a career and make a nice living outside magic. What I get out of performing at Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia or for Alex's Lemonade Stand is worth more the and $$$$. But I don't think I am a lesser performer for that. |

Al,
Thanks for your opinion, but you know what they say, they are just like _____ . I completely disagree with you about our group. See you Sat. You can read about what I think about performing for free in the Food for Thought area. |

Hey I erased that opinion. I do several jobs every year at childrens hospital for private organizations that pay me to be there for them.

Hi guys,
These are all great points. Obviously as a pastor I believe in giving back and supporting the community. But I also have all the respect in the world for those who make their primary living doing magic, which is why I am excited and honored that we are hosting Joshua Jay this Saturday and it will be at my church. I am sure it will be a tremendous lecture. I have been watching several of his DVD's over the last couple of weeks and I cannot say enough of how impressed I have been with "About Tricks". Can't wait until Sat. evening.

An off the subject observation. I looked at the map of the address of this lecture tonight, and I've worked very close to this church before at a German club's October fest several years ago.
Todd I've got some cool new rope from Singapore that I'll show you tonight.

It was ten shows in three days, in the woods, with the om pa pa music blasting, and drunks in leather shorts spiling beer all over me, but they did pay me in cash.

OK guys
I made this offer to Ryan, but it stands for all of my friends in Reading. On September 18th it will be the first meeting of the season for SAM 4, and all guests will get in free to the meeting and the Jim Pace lecture, if any of you are interested in going as my guest let me know tonight, and of course I will pay for your free admission.

Joshua Jay's lecture last night was a mind blower. His skill was second to none, and anyone that see's him will not be disappointed. I do not do coin tricks, but the one that he taught last night converted me, I bought it, and practiced it in front of my mirror until my wife turned the lights out (women just don't understand). In fact I liked him so much that I'm going to see him again tomorrow night at the IBM ring 6 meeting.

The lecture was preceded by some excellent card work which he used to warm up. It was a poor turn out, but those that braved the bad weather were well rewarded. Always good to see how a creative person thinks, and what he comes up with. If you get the chance to see Josh lecture, take it. Paul. p.s. Drat, would have taken you up on that offer Al, but unfortunately I'm away that week. I'm sure that will be another good lecture. |
