Interesting question Amerigo -
I thought the same thing about cups and wondered what all the hype was until I actually held a set of quality cups. As others have said, once you handle a set that are well balanced and just 'feel right' in your hands, it's really hard to understand why anyone would pay some of the prices such cups command. Typically, premium cups are uniformly spun, are heavier, and made from a higher grade of copper or brass than the less expensive sets. Of course, at the end of the day, the magic really lies within the performer but it's really nice to have quality tools with which to work . I hope you enjoy your cups and get many years of use from them. Best, dc

I had the Sherwood silver engraved and a set of plain copper... and sold both as I did't like the shape and balance. It's a personal thing and that doesn't mean they aren't great cups, they just didn't handle for my way of working.
I also have a set of Johnson cups and don't use them for the same reason. I still prefer my olde Paul Fox cups that Danny Dew gave me years ago.

I have a set of smooth copper Sherwood's and the Johnson Products cups in both brass & copper and really love the feel of all three sets. The Sherwood cups are my favorites now because they just feel 'right' in my hands. Guess this explains why there are so many different types of cups made. What works perfectly for one performer may not suit another.

I've been wondering the same thing about cups. My dad picked up a set for my at a Lance Burton show a long time ago before I ever thought of learning magic. I don't know who makes them but they're not the high quality copper ones. The only reason I've been wanting a new set of cups just so I can fit bigger things inside of them...

The only reason I moved on from my bazar de magia's was that they wouldn't fit a tennis ball. retrospectivley, I could have worked on the act not the final load and have got a bigger impact without the cash outlay. its the man who makes the magic not the prop. It's also worth saying that the next set you buy won't be your last. Cups are addictive things, you can always ponder whether a certain move might work better with a different cup....I think we all need to sit round in a circle and admit our addiction..
I was put on this earth to do a great many things..... I'm now so far behind that I don't think I'm ever going to die!

Now I am thinking about buying my own cups. And I'm a MENTALIST!
I don't see any effect with cups and balls that would play well for mentalism though. Anyone here know any?! |

I want to spend hours boring you with how much I love my Penguin Cups. On second thought one sentence was enough. I did have to finish out the insides by hand, but that only increases my love.
Did I mention that if my house were on fire I would grab my kid and my cups. My wife is a grown up she can fend for herself )!!!! |

Just imagine how fond you would be of a real set of Paul Fox cups, or a set of Sherwoods. There is absolutely no comparison.

Anybody written a poem along the lines of a title "Meditations on a Cup?"
Maybe starting something like this:"This cup which I hold within my hand..." Or, "Breathes there a cups-collecting addict who has never said, This will be my last set of cups... :)
The presentation makes the magic.

I now have a real set of cups , surgical steel brushed RNT II Monti cups.
The empires will go into storage. I can see how collecting could become addictive. Finely crafted items command admiration. |

I will treat them well. I'm glad you already have the copper version.
Now I have to dig out the books and tapes. Jim |
