Years ago, in Washington D.C. at Magic Masters, I bought my first magic trick, Scotch and Soda. I used it for 10 years, and after a friend begged me, I gave it to him.

I then worked in NJ for Bob (Christopher) Guile as a salesman in his magic shop back in the '80s and picked up a replacement that was with a plastic gimmick instead of metal. The thing sucked, and I ended up giving it away.

So now I'm on the web looking for a new Scotch and Soda, and I see there are so many choices. What is the best one out there? Also, is the magnetic one for Raven type effects, or is that the locking mechanism now?

Thanks,
Rob

Hi Rob,

Get the one by Johnson's, and this time don't give it away and you'll have it forever as it's very well made. It's at a good price and quality work, and comes with a brass BR. Of course there are the custom guys out there, but you'll pay 2-3x more for it and it's not really necessary, not for this.

*Try here at the bottom: http://themagicwarehouse.com/tjohnson2.html

As to the magnetic version, it isn't for Raven-type effects as it's a traditional locking mechanism. Oh, and I personally don't like it. It doesn't feel good, a little light and the insert spins in the s****l. Only good thing about it is it doesn't need a BR to reset. It can stand light scrutiny I suppose, but I'd probably not hand it out.

Scotch & Soda is a fun classic, but I don't do it much anymore. Good luck with it. Oh, and welcome to the Café. Smile -Mb

Thanks, just what I needed to know. I don't perform any longer, but my kids are old enough where they asked me to show some magic to them, so I decided to dig out my bag and see what I still had.

Selling tricks burned me out from wanting to show them. I felt like I was selling people a trick every time I performed for friends.

I think I'm over that now, it's been 15 years. I guess SNS is an oldie from my generation, but sometimes the old ones look fresh to new, younger people.

Are Tango or Sterling good brands for this trick?

I suppose they are OK at best, IMHO, but Johnson's is much better for just a little bit more money. Many people (I think mostly kids and young adults) buy Tango and Sterling products because they are cheaper, and cheaper made products, but you get what you pay for, and they all find that out soon enough if they keep practicing this stuff. But then again, specs don't get into this stuff like magicians do. They just deal with the magic at the moment. They could care less what quality materials you are using, especially if you use it well enough. Smile

I mentioned the Johnson's products because they have always made quality gaffed coins that look and feel the part and are a company that is a very good and long lasting one in magic. To me, the differences are easy to see as to quality in the gaffs. When Johnson's sell a sh**l effect, they are always the "expanded" sh**ls, never the shaved down versions as these other manufacturers typically sell at lower costs.

Anyway, there's a lot of good, new stuff out there. You might want to check into some things. But I agree, some of the older stuff is still quite good and plays well, like Scotch & Soda, the old vanishing hanky (TT), a stripper deck, etc. Smile

Yeas ago I bought a no-named S&S; after an initial adjustment to its locking ability, its worked just fine. My opinion is that they all work fairly well.

I would save my money for the "name" manufacturers when there might be a bigger difference in quality - e.g.; e-['s .

I just Bought S&S from a shop, the guy sold me one from a company called Sasco inc. Anyone ever heard of this company before? He advised me to get this one because it came with a real English penny, and was made from real coins as opposed to another one he had with fake coins for the same price.

I've been playing around with it and noticed that coin isn't flat in the s***l and I can push down on one end and the other end will pop up a bit. Is this common, or is this a defect, and can it be fixed? Thanks

Don't even try to figure it out man, just get you one by Johnson's and be done with it. The qaulity is superior to brands like Sasco and everything works properly...And no, the coin should not rock in the s***l. I just hope you didn't pay a lot for it, but hey, now you know. Smile

Johnson is always the way to go with products such as S&S, CSB, etc. Unless you have the money to splurge and get one of the customs, but for me I just don't see the justification in spending that much money. Johnson will not dissapoint.

Johnson is great, but for the discerning and (slightly crazy) performer a scotch and soda by todd lassen is a true work of art. they are not cheap, but when you see the set you'll know where your money went. the effect is the same as the others, but its the difference between driving a toyota (which I do) and driving a rolls (which I don't). Funny thing is, I still perform the sterling version quite frequently, go figure.
