Not sure if this belongs in Penny for Your Thoughts, but since they did a few mentalism effects, why not?
Last year I went to see Pete Firman at the Fringe and this year we decided to check out Barry and Stuart after their wonderful TV specials. I won't write a long review except to say there was one huge plus and one huge negative. The plus was the witty presentation. B&S have a great way to take an ordinary trick and make it feel special. But that's where the negative comes in, many (although by no means all) of the effects were very commonplace effects. But more importantly there seemed such a huge contrast between what they achieved on TV and what they achieved on stage it has disillusioned me somewhat. For example turning water into wine was a nice effect on stage , but on TV it was a orders of magnitude better. When magicians have this huge gulf between the TV and the stage, it does create the impression (perhaps a false one?) that the cameras and editing have much more impact than they should. |

I think your comments are fair Phil, but there's that magical word you very wisely included in your post: EDITING.

I agree a fair post but I simply love Barry and Stuart, their smoking routine and rubiks cube presentation is beautiful.. Boy do those two think outside the box and so well too..

Saw the show last night. I have to say they knew there were Perrier judges in at the show(I was sitting next to one of them who had a ball)and they simply and absolutely rocked! They did a great design duplication routine with their very own method. It's one of the best I've seen but they won't market it, ever. (Grrrrr!!!)

Barry and Stuart are one of my all time favorite acts. They make popular magic effects unique and original. This is what I try to do in my act.
Plus.... Stuart is sooooooo cute!!! |

The clips I've seen of those guys on YouTube are great . They really come up with some great presentations.
Classic examples of the script and the characters being more important than the "trick" . It takes all the heat off the trick and reduces the tension of Magician (Trickster) vs. Audience (the tricked) so the entertainment value is what shines through. Consequently the magic is stronger too because the audience feels more a part of the presentations. |
