Anyone have any experience flying with Handcuffs? I am starting to fly a lot more, and was not sure if I am able to bring handcuffs in my carry-on? I know I can put them in my checked baggage, but we all know how wonderful airlines are with lost bags and I want to carry as much as possible with me!
Thanks! |

Come on... you really think they will let you take cuffs on a plane?
Just a note to those pondering. You cannot carry on knives, daggers, scissors, other sharp objects, explosives, highly flamable items that smell like fuel, restraints, hand granades, swords, wrist choppers, gallon cans of gasoline to use should your cab run out of fuel on the way to the show, razor blades, or geese. Got it? If you have to ask likely it isn't gonna be allowed on. Thank you. |

Check with your local TSA a while back they did announce that you could start carrying some banned items but they had to be a local size to be allowed on. if your going on a private flight you can basically take whatever you want with you and the Pilot is responsible for what you bring on.

We fly with handcuffs, leg irons, locks and chains in our carry on and have as recent as 2 months ago and have ever since 9/11. We even flew to Turkey with them...all in our carry on. However, we were no allowed to have them in carry on with us on the way back. We had to check them in. They are NOT on the list here in the states.

There you have it....fly away and if they take'em, blame Kev. I personally think they let him get away with it cuz of his lovely wife but I'm evil that way.

I lost my thumbcuffs on a flight over to Germany. I didn't realise they were still on my keys (I use them as a key ring) and they ended up in the big pile of stuff Dave mentioned earlier
What's the deal with internal US flights? I'm guessing the regulations would be different.

I don't see you stabbing anyone with handcuffs - but you could restrain soeone inproperly........... who knows .....
but here are some "fun stories" froma UK pilot (a friend of mine) When tehy introduced the new rules James (my pilot mate) was FORCED to bin a pair of nail scisors in his carry on. so he des as he is told..... he get on the plane and gets ready to fly. It is at this point he remembers the emergancy AXE that is stored 2 foot behid him on the flight deack! SO no scissors but he has access to a fire axe! Go figgure! A friend of his had his sandwiches with him (as you would) Security checked his bag. This was just after the new rules - when they were tight and it was no liquid......... the security guard asked what was hte sandwiches .... Tuna came the reply......."well sir I cant let you take them on board........ its the liquid you see...... canned tuna comes in liquid and you cant prove it was not canned..... SO NO sandwiches!" go figgure! Talk about over keen Why can you not take on over 100 ml of WATER or any liquid then in the Dury free you can buy BIG bottles of highly flammable perfume .... couldn't you then use this to hold a plane hostage? Its MAD but there you go.... One last thing About a guy called Adam Hills (hes an australian comic) I copied this of wiki note but I remember seeing him on tv not long ago. http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Adam_Hills "Yeah, I was going through customs, just a few days after the September 11th attacks so security was really tight. As I went through the barriers, my leg set off the alarm, so I had this guy come and feel me and he felt my leg and went "Right, right what's this going on here then?" "Ah mate, it's a wooden leg" "...Ah mate, just go through, just go through" "...but I could have a knife or something..." "No mate, just go through, I don't wanna offend a spastic!" |

DON'T fly into Dubai, UAE, with handcuffs, even in your checked luggage. Restraints are illegal there. The police will take them from you.
I went through Dubai in 2004, travelling from Kosovo to Afghanistan, and had to leave my handcuffs with the police at the airport. I was leaving in two days and was allowed to pick them up as I was departing. Body armor is restricted also. |

Thanks everyone for your responses, to all those that mentioned sharp objects, seriously? You can bring a sharp object if it is under 6oz.....not really.
I fly to a good amount of my performances a year, and with my recent luggage problems I don't want to check some of my specialty cuffs that I purchased from Cannons-makes sense, sometimes I ship ahead of time, but not always feasable. But any pro will tell you to make sure that when you land, if your luggage is not there, make sure you are STILL able to put on a good show. That is why I want to be able to bring what I can with me. My friend works for the TSA and he called me and said that cuffs are not restricted so Kevin is correct, thanks again for the help. |

I think padlocks and chains would be easy to get past because they are every day equipment and are not necessarily restraints. But Hmmm.. I don't know about the straight jackets.
Do you think there may be some way you can apply to be exempt if you ask for permission ahead and provide information about why you have them and where you are work? |

To answer Daves question. hand cuffs are considered weapons. They make a mean pair of brass knuckles. They can poke out an eye if open and and you can use them to pry doors open. If they are on a wrist and you use that wrist in a braw you may stand the chance of breaking your wrist but also doing damage to the opponent. Holding one cuff, you can swing the other cuff at your victim. Long chains make the cuff into a Mace. Long chains can be used to choke a person. Double locked Thumb Cuffs make a form of brass knuckle. Look at the Gale finger buster, It's small but powerful. It was also used for crowd control. You get a small sharp metal object shoved in your ribs.... you move out of the way. Technically a toothpick can be considered a weapon if that is it's intended use. And the most dangerous weapon of all is the... (insert joke here)

My three answers to “insert joke here” are……..
Tuner sandwich laced with liquid explosives…….. Wet cucumber ……… Dave’s razor sharp wit….. I don’t think they would let you fly internationally with chains and padlocks, or handcuffs etc. I am sure they would have problems with them! |

They didn't have trouble with our cuffs, lock & chains when we flew to Turkey in May. What they did have trouble with is when we tried to fly back. The Turkish TSA has them on their list, they are not on the USA's TSA list.
