It's available from http://www.cards4magic.co.uk in the UK. I'm just using it on a deck & it seems a lot more pleasant than roughing spray! It seems to work well too.
BTW does anyone have any idea how Ken Brook used to R & S cards? They were brilliantly done. |

Is this just wax? he used to show on some videos to put wax on cards for some effect.
Or is this different? |

This is not wax.
I have a deck that I made over a year ago it is still working perfectly with NO touch ups. Love this product! Mike |

Heck I just discovered this at Top Hat Magic last week and tried it today. Woo hoo. I love it. Quick and easy application. Beats spraying and laying.

It contained a chemical (can't remember it's exact name) that the politically-correct 'powers that be' obviously thought we couldn't be trusted not to drink, or smear in our eyes. A great pity as it clearly worked better than roughing spray or these new roughing sticks - a point proven by the fact that I have a nudist and a brainwave deck of Ken Brooke's from the 1970's that still adhere perfectly. Another point to note - Ken's cards were Alf Cooke's then Fox Lakes (not the modern-day, woeful Aviator Bridge decks - albeit they look the same). Maybe, the properties of older card manufacture aided in the fluid lasting so long? Just to add that I've used a roughing stick - but personally think it's absolutely dire. It doesn't last anywhere near as long, and if you really think those streaky, white marks aren't noticeable to spectators, then the only person that you are fooling is yourself.

Tend to agree with Merc Man, the roughing stick will work but it does leave a residue and in my experience wears off fairly quickly. I do carry one in a small "emergency" kit in case I need to touch up a deck or make up an ID on the fly.

Can I just add something to prove my point guys?
Last week via ebaY, I ordered a 'lot' of vintage magic - a box full of old props for sale. Arriving Saturday morning, I worked my way through the many tricks within. There was a rough & smooth deck - from the Kaymar Magic Company, dated 1951. Guess what? The cards (Alf Cooke) in excellent condition, SIXTY ONE YEARS OLD, ADHERE PERFECTLY - because they were treated with roughing FLUID. In 2063 (or fifty-one years from now) I wonder whether there will magicians posting on The Magic Café, stating that their decks treated with roughing spray, or roughing STICKS, are doing similar? I doubt it. I doubt it very much.

My guess is the cards weren't used that much.
I have an old Fox Lake Invisible Deck that I got in a big lot of vintage magic over a decade ago,the roughing on it is perfect. I think the reason why is from lack of use
Also if anyone is actually using the same roughed deck for 50 years, I really doubt it will be in pristine shape. Roughing fluid wears off just as the roughing stick does. To each his own. Mike |

Whilst I agree with the point about the R&S deck clearly not having being used much, the same certainly cannot be said for the Brainwave and Nudist Decks via Ken Brooke. Since around 1978, they've had more than their fair share of outings, believe me!
In contrast, a few months ago, I was trying the Brainwave principle with a deck that was constructed with a roughing stick. It was supplied by a very busy UK performer/dealer for me to try. Within literally a month, the cards were not adhering. The old ploy of keeping a roughed deck in your pocket for 30 mins also had no affect whatsoever (it's a little known fact that a deck prepared with roughing fluid works even better when slightly warm). To this end Mike, I have to totally disagree with your statement that "roughing fluid wears off just as the roughing stick does". That certainly isn't the case in my pretty considerable experience of handling decks that have been prepped with fluid (not, I hasten to add, spray) compared to the roughing stick. Just to add that you also aren't left with cards that look as if they've been smeared with congealed animal fat!

I'm sorry my opinion makes you so angry
I'm also sorry that you seem to think your opinion is the only correct one. ROUGHING FLUID
There, I agree with you now
I guess the fact that I have not used any kind of roughing spray in years & only use my roughing stick does not matter because Your considerable experience with rough & smooth is the only correct answer. Thank you so much for the help. Mike |
