And those SAME animatronics are still there... Later controlled by Binloops of tape, and now by solid state Chips.... but same machines!
I have had regular opportunities to walk the track in FLA, and there are elements that were designed by or even touched by Walt himself... Makes one nostalgic.

That was great to see. I used to work at Disneyland as a sweeper 25 or 30 years ago and always loved to walk the Haunted Mansion after closing. Working that area was always my favorite.
My least favorite was Small World. Ugh!

Hm. My beloved Mansion seemed a bit...tawdry...in full daylight, and unlike Leaping Lizards I'm not sure I'd enjoy a further look "behind the curtain." I prefer the Haunted Mansion in all its black-lit ethereality.
Coupla years back I was stuck in the graveyard scene for a few minutes, then a CM announced "houselights coming on" over the PA. Boy, did they...everything was brightly lit for about 15 minutes, and the mechanics were impressive. Things I'd assumed to have been kinda flimsy turned out to be robust and substantial (no styrofoam headstones, for example). But for me, the entire experience was a little like finding out how the Zombie works. In this instance, I'd rather not learn that The Great and Powerful Oz is really papier mache. For further discussion, may I recommend another board I "haunt?" http://www.doombuggies.com Leland |

I've worked at WDW for years and I have to say, being behind the scenes has never ruined anything for me. If anything it makes me respect it and in awe even more.

Leland, Cousin and friend, I understand your point...really, I do. But now, decades later, in a day and age where even my local kiddie amusement park has some digitally controlled robotic dinosaurs, it is time to give those Disney people their due: they were geniuses and visionaries and magicians (of another sort, but still magicians), and while we don't really need to see all of their secrets (which is the point I agree with you on), a bit of awe and respect is in order. And this youtube film gives us that.
Here is a revealing truth about me: my Pirates of the Caribbean DVD has a short film from that old Disney show--what was it, the Wonderful World of Disney, or something like that--about the ride. I've watched that short film forty or fifty times. It was worth every penny I paid for the DVD. (Which brings up a question: is there something like that for Haunted Mansion?) I was born in 1963 in Garden Grove, about 100 yards from the Annaheim city limit line, and the house we lived in was about a mile as the crow flies from the Matterhorn. On summer nights we would sometimes gather in the front yard and watch fireworks and watch Tinkerbell do her ride from the Matterhorn to Sleeping Beauty's castle. So I have some Disney cred, even if we moved away from California before my fifth birthday. Wait a minute. Is there a question in this thread? And Doug: Love you, buddy...I may just have to buy another copy of your book, just to make sure you can afford another season pass to Disneyland. As far as dark rides go, I rode the Knoebel's ride five times about three weeks ago. It was perhaps the best dark ride in the pre-Disney style I've ever ridden. But Disney...ah...Disney.... Nuff Said. |

Sorry for the double post, but here's the Pirates of the Caribbean film I was talking about, though it is not complete (some of the opening stuff is missing):

If there were something like this for the Haunted Mansion, I'd pay good money for it. The Kurt Russell/Osmonds film...well...it's OK if you can take all the star commentary "This ride makes me feel really creepy!" Geez I wish I could go to Disneyland right now. |

Hi All,
I agree... the Haunted Mansion is incredible. I am not sure if it is the biggest,(I am not even sure if there are any other examples left) but the Peppers Ghost Illusion in the parlor is incredible. Can you imagine seeing Peppers Ghost on a stage in the 1800's? It still fools people today. I remember when I was 9 or 10 years old and thought "Boy, when I grow up I am going to buy a big Antebellum mansion and build my own Haunted Mansion" I agree with Stoneunhinged.... I wish I was there right now!! |

(And this despite the drunken pirates' cannon spree scene having been "sweetened" for broadcast -- even after the Depp/Captain Jack additions, that gunfight is nowhere NEAR that explosive in real time). And yeah, Disney W.E.D. engineers and their successor Imaginears ARE Magicians of the first order! I am second to none in my admiration of the House the Mouse built, ably aided by an army of talented men and women dedicated to creation of a whimsical, fantastic alternate world. And that's exactly what I alluded to in my original post: Their mechanical achievements, as revealed in the unflattering house lights of the Mansion, are unexcelled. But in such harsh lighting, those achievements are simply stunning automata, and the Mansion is merely a well-made warehouse packed with impressive props. But in the darkness the true nature of the Mansion is revealed, and that which is excellent becomes even better. Scrim and pneumatics vanish, Pepper's Ghosts waltz to life, what was a sophisticated stage just outside the berm dissolves into the 'boundless realms of the supernatural.' Leota Tombs and Thurl Ravenscroft morph into immortal caricatures, and the Pillsbury Doughboy becomes instead a leering Ghost Host, chiding us to escape the way of all flesh. In short, for all its impressive technique (in admiration of which I MIGHT be second to Sre Gepetto), the makers of the Mansion exceeded both their reach and their grasp, creating an experience that is more than the sum of its parts. The Mansion perfectly depicts the ghost mythos, certainly of American culture -- and largely, I suspect, of other cultures as well; if there were an afterlife where ceaseless duels were fought by non-corporeal combatants...where partygoers issued forth from broken caskets...where Grim Grinning Ghosts really did come out to socialise...it would surely be as depicted at The Haunted Mansion. Walt, perhaps, felt it best to leave the last adventure out of his cheery, animated Neverland, but he placed it here, amid the menacing trees and glaring wallpaper of the Mansion. And in its gloomy foyer my disbelief is left, suspended...for a time...while my Doombuggy transports me to a Swinging Wake. Leland |

Hey, Other Stone (and interested Magi):
Tho' it may not be the full access pass you've wanted, there is a look at the HM you may interesting. It's a bonus feature on the new DVD release of "The Nightmare Before Christmas," showing how the seasonal NBC overlay is applied at the HM. [Youse guys what ain't been to the Park, the overlay depicts the invasion of the HM by characters, sound, and sight gags from "The Nightmare Before Christmas."] Bonus points if you can cite the other Jack that Tim Burton worked on for Disney, about 17 years before NBC came out. Picture title, please. Leland |

Return to Oz: Jack Pumpkinhead
Unfortunately, Disney really let the ball drop on the whole OZ franchise thing, and Walt supposedly had it wrapped up in the 1950s. Am I at least somewhere near the right entrance, if not the correct ballpark? Chris |

FWIW stoneunhinged, I have the Haunted Mansion DVD but there are no "give-aways" on it as to the secrets of the Mansion. I do like the disonant pipe organ version of the Wedding march though.
Just hanging out with the rest of my fellow dregs.
