As you can guess by the subject header, I'm going to pop the question to my girl friend soon and I want to do it in a magicial fashion. Can any of you think of a good effect for producing the ring?
Thanks in advance for the information, |

It wasn't long ago that I gave my wife a diamond anniversary ring that she had been oggling for a few years. She saw it in a jewelry store on Sanibel Island, Florida each year where we went on our vacation. The first thing I had to do was to tell, her on our last visit, that is was way too expensive and that we simply couldn't afford it. So she had to accept the idea that she just couldn't have it. Of course, I snuck in and bought it anyway. Then I waited like 7 months until our anniversary. The ring was long off of her mind. We went out to dinner one night for our anniversary. I had fastened it to a streamer that I had loaded into a TT. I loaded another streamer on top of that. When there was break in the meal I told her happy anniversary and then slowly pulled out the first streamer- which of course delighted her. As every one does when faced with magic, she asked me to do it again and so I pulled out the second one. She was stunned when that ring popped out and swung there. She cried tears of happiness and of course was so distracted she never had any idea about the TT I stashed!. It was simple but effective.

Ok, here's what I did (I hope you'll like it). I made reservations at our favorite restaurant (first date was there) in person and asked the hostess to put a filled champagne glass under our table while they were setting it up ($20 should cover it). I explained why and she was more than happy (the $20 didn't hurt either) to help.
When you sit down, drop your napkin and use that opportunity to place the ring in the glass, at the same time placing the glass in your lap as your come back up. It can sit there for a while and if you move around enough the bubbles may even feel pretty good! ;-) After you have dinner (and believe me, wait until after dinner since you don't want her crying into her food), tell her that you have a special trick that you've been practicing that you would like to show her. Using your napkin, produce the champagne glass ala Lennart Green's glass production with the ring inside. Ask her to marry you! Depending on the answer, retrieve ring from glass, dry off and place on her finger. If it's not the answer you want, just drink the champagne and swallow the ring (JUST KIDDING!) How's that? |

You should not ruin such a special moment by doing a magic trick. Just tell her you love her and get on one knee.

First of all, Congratulations !!!
It was just a few months ago when I posted the same question! I thought that it would be great to do a magical proposal... but in the end, I did it traditionally. Some advice that was given to me made me realize I would be doing it more for myself than for her. If you think that she would enjoy it more if you did a magic trick, then go for it... You could do a ring-on-string then switch rings at the end. -Jason |

You could try Paul Harris' Backlash. This is basically an effect where you can have someone sign both sides of a card and, at the end, you erase one of their signatures and in its place can be anything. Another one you could try is having a photo of a ring appear on her signed card and then flick it off into a 3-D one: then ask the question. I would be happy to send you instructions for both effects.

If I were to propose to a girl: I saw a rose that was a ring holder when you open it up. So, you could do a floating rose for her and produce the ring inside the rose. Or, if you have seen Jay Scott Berry, he has some good ring through ribbon routines. I would do a ring routine with a steel gold ring and at the end produce the wedding ring on the ribbon. But I would probably do it the old fashion way, anway.

Tell her you're going to do a trick with a quarter, do a Bobo switch and place the "quarter" (ring) in her hand. Distract her with some words(so she doesn't notice the drastic change of texture) and have her open her hand slowly as you ask the magic question.

That's a thought, but I want to end up on bended knee when the ring in produced, and not just have her with a ring in her hand. Good thought though.

Magic does not have to fit in every occasion. I thought about this same thing when I proposed. Then I realized, this wasn't a trick, this was real. Congratulations!!!!!!!!! Magically, Carter

You'll probably be nervous enough when proposing. Would you take the risk in messing up a trick, and therefore ruin the already magical moment? IMHO, go with the advice of Tilt and magic_carter.

Who knows? All I know for sure is that it's going to be at the Castle...and within the next couple of months. But in the time between now and then, I can work on an effect, and see how I feel about it. You're right, though, Amon-Re. That would be performing under some serious pressure. But, like I said...who knows?

"Needle Thru Arm" is the way to go. Be sure to use lots of stage blood. At the end, produce the ring from behind her ear and calmly place it on the edge of the bloody needle as you bend to one knee and offer it. Don't let her screams ruin the romance of the moment.
P.S.- I have bad luck with women.

I think this is a no brainer. Go with Marko on this one: NEEDLE THRU ARM. It's a night she'll never forget.
Or you could produce a rose , and when you let her smell it to show her it's real , have the ring on top of the rose. GOOD LUCK on what ever you decide. |
