This effect was described as one of the best three card monte versions in this forum. But I could not find a description of this effect in any dealers advertisement. Does anybody know more? Or is there a link to a performance video?
I am also interested if anybody knows a magic dealer in Europe who sells "Three card prince". |

Three Card Monarch was manufactured several years ago by Sun Magic, but is no longer being made. You can occasionally find a set of those HUGE cards for sale on the various auction sites.
The cards for Three Card Prince are smaller and therefore easier to handle, but they're still plenty big. The routine for Prince is exactly the same as that for Monarch. The only difference in the cards (other than their size) is that the "role" of the King and the Queen have been switched (i.e., with Monarch you end with three Queens; with Prince you end with three Kings). Three Card Prince can still be found at many U.S. dealers (I got my set about a year ago). Here are a couple of links: http://www.dennymagic.com/cgi-bin/hazel.......m=004061 http://www.hanklee.org/xcart/product.php?productid=3575 I'm not familiar with European dealers, so I cannot help you there. I've not found any performance videos online, but if you can get you hands on a video copy of Harry Anderson's 1986 TV special "Hello Sucker," he closes his show with Three Card Monarch. |

It is also described in his book: Harry Anderson - Wise Guy

I saw Anderson perform it when I was younger and it was rather good. Later saw Paul Daniels do it on his Edinburg show dvd and also Marco tempest did it on his virtual magician tv show. I also owned the smaller version for the short time.
The problems I allways had with it were that even the smaller version was way too big for my normal briefcase. Also the routine lacked something.. I never found good presentation for it and I believe there was little too much handling involved for the effect to be truly clear. Its good, but I am not so sure if I would call it the best... the kicker is amazing but other than that the routine isn't my cup of taste. Ken Brookes Chase the ace is much simpler to follow in my opinion. J-M |

Thank you very much. I think I will look for the book first.

By way of coincidence, I just recently acquired a copy of the 50th anniversary of Genii Magazine (July 1986). In it is a Sun Magic ad for Three Card Monarch, and the price--more than 20 years ago--was $130.
That makes the current price for Three Card Prince seem an absolute bargain. |

A nice Sun Magic Three Card Monarch was on Ebay a month ago, so they're still around and coming up for sale.
Be aware though that they're getting quite old, and were made of a plastic that yellows with age if not cared for. Some Monarch sets I've seen have quite an uneven yellow border around the edges. Unfortunately, the individual cards don't all "yellow" exactly the same, so the individual cards can be identified by close observers........something not really desirable for this effect. Carefully stored Monarch sets don't seem to suffer yellowing of the edges. It's a completely different method, but if you're interested in a large Monte, Dave Powell Magic makes two jumbo sizes, including one approx the same size as Harry Anderson's Monarch, which is to say HUGE!! The Powell is mechanically gaffed, and the Monarch is passively gaffed.........both are very effective for a larger audience. |

I bought a Sun Monarch via ebay two weeks ago...not much yellowing. And, it does climax with 3 Kings, unlike what is said in an earlier post. The instructions/routine really are a mess in my opinion...I just reworked it entirely, and am happier with my own routine....stronger 3 punch climax.

Hayre, I'm not sure how close the printed routine for Monarch is to Harry's performance with the cards on the "Hello Sucker" TV special, but I can tell you that his "Hello Sucker" routine with the Monarch card set absolutely kills.
The routine is also in Harry's "Hello Sucker" book. I have noticed some differences between the routine as it was performed on TV, and as it's laid out in the book. Perhaps the paper instructions with the cards are different again. I transcribed the patter from the TV special to use as the basis for my own routine using the Dave Powell mechanical card set. |

The handling in the instructions that come with the 3c Prince prop is somewhat different than the handling in the book, as is the patter. In both cases, what's contained in the book is significantly more thorough and, IMO, better. That said, I don't use the patter as set forth in the book verbatim. I've adapted and revised it, particularly the tag lines, to suit my character. |
