Lets say you have some water with food coloring in it. How can you turn it clear again instantly? I know that you can turn water to wine but how about the opposite? And I'm talking multiple colors not just red?
Thanks,

Phenolphthalein is purple/pink in base, clear in acid. Try adding this to some mild ammonia (base) then pour in vinegar (acid) for the change. If you look up acid/base indicators you'll probably find some other colour changes too.

That's a good question -
To start, bleach can work with some food colorings - but let's get this out of the way first: Chemicals make those nice colored liquids toxic - unsafe around children. Okay - now to business on the clear/color stuff: there are books on chemical magic and even a few posts at the Café about a red/yellow/green chemical reaction. As to apparently turning water into wine - extracts like "think a drink" Hoffman used might be a good start. The Gospel folks might have some ideas for you in that department over in "The Good News".

Yes, bleach does work only with some. Just tried it before I made the previous post, but did not work with the colourings I had. I didn't want to send you in the wrong direction.
I have a book (can't find it right now) by John Lippy Jr. called "Modern Chemical Magic." He has spent time both as a professional magician and a chemist. Unfortunately, as Jonathan pointed out, many of these things are quite hazardous. I am a science teacher and there are many chemicals in the book I mentioned that I cannot even access, or would not dare to even if I could. Phenolphthalein should be easy to come by, not too hazardous, but can give you diarrhea if you drink it! By the way, most plant dyes (particularly in flower petals) are acid/base indicators. Not sure if this helps. If you get stuck PM me and I'll try something at work.

There is an effect in Dunniger's (The stuff is dated but a lot can be re worked and is over looked) Where glasses of water change to different colors instantly. I wanted to do that then change them back using the same method. One I go downstairs and greab the book ill give you the page number so you can see what I Am talking about. I had a neat idea!
Thanks,

Not not this helps with methods, but the late kid's puppeteer par excellence, Shari Lewis, hosted a TV magic variety show in the late 60's or early 70's. I have a videotape - it's great!! If you can get it on e-bay like I did, I urge you to! I distinctly remember Shari did a wonderful water color changing routine with 3 or 4 pitchers of water, while singing a song.
That show is worth watching for the showmanship. She could have been a brilliant magician (and indeed was for one nationally televised "variety" show based on magic), instead blessed us with the magic of Lambchops and friends for many years. Of course, it helped that her father was a magician (once the "official" magician of New York City!) and numerous magi wandered through her house when she was growing up. You brought some nice memories up with you question. Thanks!

Hey kerpa,
I like Sheri Lewis too. I've found some DVD's of her old show cheap at Walmart. I haven't seen the demonstration you're talking about though. Was there an explanation (she occasionally did give one especially in her more recent shows) or was it just a performance? What's the name of the program or the program # from the Video? If its packed away, as many of my Tapes are, don't bother. -Mary Mowder |

Loved Cheri Lewis and lamb chop. I saw her daughter on WGN TV doing some Lamb Chop bits about 4 months ago. I would guess that Cheri would have used very simple indicators like cabbage juice.
To the chemistry...many indicator turn pink with an acid and blue with a base. Years ago I did a very simple thing where I had "Kool Aid" powder in the stem of small plastic glasses. You could also stir the water with a clear straw that has a small amount of "Kool Aid" in it. Anyway, bleach will clear this red wine in a fraction of a second. |

Seems like I saw the Spangler's do something like this back in the 70's.
They are out of Colorado, and know a lot about science.

If you have access to an analytical chemistry book, you can look up many acid/base indicators, each with its own colors for acidic or basic solution. Obtaining those indicators is another matter, unless you have access to a college or high school lab (most companies don't use these indicators any more.). Then if you want to ramp up your effect a few notches, look for what's called oscillating reactions. These reactions are unique, they will change color, multiple times, all on their own. The timing of the changes is controlled by the concentrations used. These compounds, however, can tend to be rather esoteric, and hence harder to find, unless you can order directly from a chemical company (e.g.; Aldrich). All of this can be a lot of work, and messy. You may want to try other methods

So clean... and my friend saw it performed live in Japan so there is no camera trick... Anyone knows about where is this version published?? Or is this really not in any book, rather in a chemisty book? |

Just watched this clip and I have seen it done at the Museum of Natural Science in a chemical demonstration. I seem to remember they sold a book with the experiments in it. I have to check. I may have bought it just for this trick. I compared the color change to turning a light switch on.

Hi,
Here is Louis de Matos performing "Sands of the Desert" in "Black Water Clear Water": http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pla......a2f3kOP0 This thread in the "Finger/Stage manipulation" board discuss it: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......art=0#11 I found both products at The Magic Depot (only a quick search - maybe more dealers have them): BWCW: http://www.themagicdepot.com/product_inf......_id=6496 SotD: http://www.themagicdepot.com/product_inf......_id=6844 I also found this SotD Buyer's Guide at MD: http://themagicdepot.com/secrets/sands-o......s-guide/ written as late as January 16, 2013 by Aaron Smith Best regards, XerxX

I have always been fascinated with chemical magic - particularly color liquid changes. I have owned many versions of such - currently Steve Scheizer has his version of Chameleon Cool Aid which he markets. It is very, very good. You have several color changes - from clear to red/green/yellow and back to clear. He can be found on Ebay - mention my name.
I am a collector of magic, particularly Anverdi. He was a brilliant inventor of both electronic and liquid magic. One of his effects called Sigowi is very cool. After placing a color scarf in a clear tumbler, all is momentarily covered with an open ended clear tube - scarf vanishes - then the same color liquid appears in glass from nowhere! There are NO pulls involved with this miracle - it is absolutely brilliant. You can see a clip of me performing this here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gekB9B1epjw Chuck Caputo |

Not the best demonstration but you get the idea. Shake the bottle a few times and it becomes red. Shake it again and it turns green. Let it stand and it changes again to red and afterwards to yellow/orange. Can be repeated several times. You can find more info on Google or for those who want you can always pm me. I've showed it several times in my chemistry classes and children really believe it's magic. The chemicals used are not expensive at all, the problem is buying them (especially the indicator) in small quantities. |
