Cyberqat Inner circle You can tell I work on the net from my 2209 Posts |
Hi Guys,
I'm traiend in film making so I certainly know how much can be done in editing just the 'good bits'... but I still found some of his demonstrations of on-the-street combinations of distraction and suggestion on his "Mind Control" show down right remarkable. I've never seen anyone do such either sneaky or basically "unprepped" sugestion planting before. A few of the examples you would think go "against interest" which I didn't really think was possible period. (One that sticks in my mind was the teller at the dog track who he convinced to pay out on losing tickets.) Is this for real? Is it really that easy to plant strong suggestions in everyday interractions?

I was really gutted when it slowly dawned on me that the dog track thing was just an illusion.
Originally (I think it was New Years day 2000 that show first aired) I genuinely believed it, and confess it really drove my then curious fascination for hypnosis into stronger territories (damn you Derren, look at all the expense you caused me). I have since read messages from people who work at that track saying that its not up to them what to pay out, its all automatic based on the ticket barcodes etc (which makes totally obvious sense, why trust a teller to know what dog won or lost?) So I'm guessing its either a ticket switch, a stooge, or whatever (benqcd I can't notice anything on rewatching it). The cleverness of Derrens work is that he is framing his own context on impressing the person in the routine (i.e. the bloke at the dogtrack), whilst we are 'accidentally' led in ourselves as the ultimate victims, even though he directly tells us "what you are about to see is magic, misdirection and showmanship...". I also suspect that the paying with blank paper routine is dual reality, i.e. there is real money under the paper, or it has been paid for already so they look confused because they cant understand why he is now giving them paper. The one routine that I still want to believe is real, and hypnotically clever, is the wallet steals at Blackpool. |

Willbox, if you go onto youtube, there was a clip of an NLP guy explaining in explicit detail of what he THOUGHT Derren was doing with the wallet steal, and in fairness, what he was saying was amazing and seemed (to me) very logical, and if you notice he does the same thing everytime in all of the steals (even the one that doesn't work).
It's fast bit of cicanery but if it's done the way this NLP guy suggests, Derren is quite literally one of the greatest thinkers of all time. I would search for the clip but my home internet connection is crap and I don't want to be on here at work |

Hi Guys,
Firstly, I love ALL of Derren's work and have even had the honour of meeting him in person. I think that Derren's greatest magic trick has been fooling magicians and alike, that what he uses is genuine "psychological techniques"... I have soooo many magician/mentalist friends always commenting on the "great use of NLP" or any other jargon they have been fooled into believing! Don't get me wrong, these are only signs of a truly skilled and talented performer...and Derren's creativity gests full marks! Real hypnosis is used....but so is "non" real hypnosis....mixing it up and ultimately fooling hypnotists themselves. A true pro. Derren is legend. |

I think "The System" does a great job explaining the mind of DB. He is, to me, the greatest magical mind of our time.

Jon,
if you have the time can you elaborate on that comment? What specifically have you learnt from The System? I am guessing you mean he can take a classic effect and bring a unique presentation to it. Anything else? Anthony

I think Derren Brown is extraordinarily gifted because his "Magic" not only astounds but disproves (or proves)and in turn CHALLENGES many of those dearly held beliefs of our human society at large...
For Derren to take on religion and the paranormal community is not only brave but has proven to be dangerous to some, kudos to him for saying what needs to be said about the perceived "supernatural" elements in our world... Imo, only a few Magicians or Mentalists have ever gone as far as him in this respect... Randi comes to mind, though he never really had his own TV Series... Though I suspect that the Media and the Internet have greatly contributed to Derren Brown's message being spread as widely as it has... AND he's not yet as well known in America as Blaine or Angel and already has a following worldwide... A feat in itself... Hope he's seen by more people and NOT just for entertainment's sake...

Sorry Pakar but I didn't agree with one single thing you said in the above statement. And I'm actually a fan of DB.

Yes of course Pakar. As frustrating as it is for one who teaches unteachable pupils I will allow you to stumble along the pathway. I'll be waiting for you at the other side with a hot meal for you. And ther'll be a guy with a small goatie beard and a tic sitting with me pishing himself laughing. I'll then introduce you to Derren and you can tell him about the kudos you've been lavishing him with on the earthplane. He'll then laugh and pish some more before informing you that you simply can't get in. But hey, yes, let's at least agree to disagree.
