Oops, I didn't mean exposing how it's done... But after restoring the torn newspaper, IS IT REALLY NECESSARY THAT ALL INSIDE PAGES BE EXPOSED/SHOWN to the audience?
Will exposing the inside pages really add to the effect? Or will NOT EXPOSING the inside pages make the effect weak? I read a couple of times somewhere that many magicians feel that restoring the newspaper should be the end of the trick... since the magic has been done, and showing the inside pages may be a little overkill. Any thoughts on this? |

It all depends on how it is presented. If the effect was performed with skill the inside pages will not have to be shown. If everything goes well in a professional manner, the magician will have his/her audience undercontrol convincing it was no need to look inside. I never seen a kid say after the effect, "Let me look inside." Mostly everytime when I am opening my paper to restore the audience is already clapping. Imaging a magician using three Linking Rings to perform. They are not passed out to the audience. If he/she did a good job, it will convince the audience with no need to pass them out for examination.
There are methods it can be presented where it can be shown inside. The only two DVDs with several methods (some involve showing inside the newspaper) are by Ben Salinas with his Tear and Restored Newspaper effects and "Worlds Greatest Magic" Newspaper Tear and Restored Newspaper effects. Performing the Newspaper Tear and Restore last is no problem. It can even be used in the middle. A good magician will know to perform the grand fanale last. |

I think when a spectator sees an effect two things happen, first they're hit with the suprprise of the effect and so they're stunned for a moment. Later, they calm down and try and rationalize how the trick works. Magicians add those little touches like showing the pages to keep the second rationalism step from operating. When I used to perform cups and balls I used to end with a spongeball final load and the reaction was right, until they reached for the ball and thought, "oh you can get that under there if you have fast hands" so now I stick to regular fruit. Same thing when I do a newspaper tear, I think as it happens everyones impressed but once that afterthought starts to kick in, you better have disproved the "the other paper is hidden somewhere" theory by showing them the pages.

I like it when both sides are shown. I wouldn't flip through a bunch of pages.
