It would be more humane of PETA just shoots the whale and other critters rather than letting them go to die of starvation.
Hey! I found out they are opening a tiger retirement home (rescue? not sure what to call it) in my townish type area! Cool, I'll have wild cats down the road, which is nice! |

No but they are condemming them to a life sentence AWAY from what they have known which is ACTIVITY designed to enhance their lives by excersising behaviors and learned contact with humans (we are funny to them more than likely plus we have good food)...what is a sanctuary? Solitary confinement elsewhere not nearly as condusive to their well being...then some misguided moron sets the animal free to be instantly killed in it's 'real world' which is TERRIFYING not exhilerating. There is great joy in these animals for both species...ripped away by a misinformed twit.

I still remember how an otter was once freed into its natural environment with a number of PETA types applauding and ooo-ing and ahhh-ing only to witness the little critter being snapped up by an orca.
Of course, if they do replace the live exhibits with vr displays they will be bankrupt in no time so there may be a bright side to this nonsense after all

A-Men.
Sea World itself had a beautiful Grey Whale named JJ that was rescued as a pup. It grew and grew and was healthy and seemingly 'happy' (It got regular food and loving attention...but alas she grew to big and the do gooders were beside themselves to FREE JJ so they could feel good the next time they thought about themselves...a HUGE undertaking was underway to get JJ acclimated to being FREE in her REAL environment...the big day came and the poor deluded animal was set loose in the sea. She was an adolecent with NO (ZERO) clue as to what being a whale was all about except comfort and safety and regular meals and FUN training and TOYS...and.... a couple of days later my Daughter was on Coast Guard patrol off of Long Beach and the Harbour Police radioed that they had found an adolecent female Gray Whale answering to th EXACT description of JJ...patially devoured (ie DEAD). This news NEVER got out and actually surpressed...it might disturb the good feelings of the misguided school children who had been allowed to asuage their guilt of looking at a grey Whale in a big tank. This is a google search that will tell you all about how wonderful it was to free JJ...sort of do gooder frenzy. http://www.google.com/search?q=jj+the+wh......&oe=utf8 JJ was magnificent and INNOCENT and not meant to be fish food.

My family just got back from a trip to New Hampshire which included a visit to Clark's Trading Post, famous throughout New England for its trained bear shows since the early 1950s.
In New Hampshire these days a black bear in the wild lives an average of something like 4-7 years, barely reaching reproduction age. The oldest of the seven bears at Clark's is now around 27 years old and living a peaceful retirement. Their bears, raised in captivity, have an averge life expectancy of something like 15 to 20 years, three to four times as long as they would live in the wild.

One must think of themselves in the animals place...what would you prefer?
A SHORT life of Persuit...Predation...starvation...disease...being mamed...freezing...being raped and abused by other members of the pride, herd or pack...being poached and becoming wild game exotic meat in an outdoor bizarre...hunted for ivory or a foot or your willie...trapped, having hair burned off...being clubbed skinned or cooked alive and generally having a short and violent miserable life with the occasional happy romp in the weeds. Or being pampered and cared for and learning a stimulating trade to earn your keep. My choice is the latter...some might choose the former because it's more natural...horse crap. What about more natural for humans? That is ALSO the former untill we learned things could be better. A HUGE mistake is made that the animal has preferences...the wild animal has NO CLUE. The captive born animal has no clue the other way around. The mistake is made that caring for an animal PROPERLY in captivity is somehow abuse and robbing it of it's true life...that's if these morons think enough to make a mistake. BOTH situations are VALID and one, the animal in captivity can help enhance the lives of those still in the wild. Bottom line is there is no pressure of extiction when animals are bred and cared for. Why not FREE your self and live in a cave in Borneo...it's the natural way to go. Edfucate your self as to the FACTS. Peta and it's moronic knee jerk minions pass out coloring books as to how Ringling beats and abuses the animals... PLEASE take some time to see what is actually the case at the center for Elephant Conservation... http://www.elephantcenter.com/ Then when these ignoratnt blithering misinfornmed idiots come screaming with signs in your face you will KNOW the facts. For those a bit lazy the following regards the PERFORMING members of the Ringling herds... "The Asian elephant has been living and working with humans for thousands of years. More than one-third of the remaining Asian elephants in the world interact closely with humans in different places and ways, such as circuses, zoos, agricultural and logging industries, religious ceremonies, and eco-tourism. To learn how elephants and people work together at The Greatest Show On Earth®, check out our facts on performing elephants below. 1. Elephants that perform with Ringling Bros. are provided with round-the-clock veterinary attention, nutritious meals, and a clean, safe home. 2. Elephants at Ringling Bros. are stimulated by all the exciting activity around them, have time for play and social interaction with other animals, and have a chance to use their physical and mental skills every day. 3. Trained elephants are more predictable in their behavior, and that is a key reason why it's safe to be around them. There is no evidence that captive elephants are any more prone to aggressive or erratic behavior than those in the wild. 4. Studies have shown that the public display of performing elephants contributes to heightened public awareness of the animals themselves and of our responsibility for their well-being and protection. This is especially true for children, who not only become more aware of elephants and their special needs and abilities, but also experience firsthand the importance of caring for and respecting all animals. 5. A positive, healthy environment is the foundation of training elephants. Therefore, the cornerstone of all circus elephant training at Ringling Bros. is reinforcement through praise, repetition and reward. 6. The display and care of elephants and other performing animals are subject to animal welfare laws and regulations at the federal, state and local levels. Ringling Bros. has an excellent record of care for all our animals. 7. Under the federal Animal Welfare Act, all circuses are required to have a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) exhibitor's license. 8. The USDA conducts regular unannounced inspections of performing animals and their stable areas. The federal Animal Welfare Act regulates and sets guidelines for housing, transportation and care for most of our performing animals. However, Ringling Bros. observes these guidelines for our entire animal family. 9. Circuses and other animal exhibitors are also subject to state and local animal welfare laws and permit requirements. Such regulations provide protection to all performing animals and allow for the prosecution of those who neglect or mistreat the animals in their care. 10. Only those elephants with a suitable temperament and a natural predisposition toward training are selected for Ringling Bros. performances. For example, most circuses employ female Asian elephants for performances, since their social structure better lends itself to training and performing. Bull elephants are more solitary by nature. and so on...sure in the old days there was abusiveness...but those who care and know what they are doing are far from those times. "Elephants and people work together"...as do Orcas and people and Seals and Dogs and Cats...there is nothing more natural. Most importantly, see this pge: http://www.elephantcenter.com/default.aspx?id=7448 How much of that do you think PETA is aware of or takes the time to investigate? Zero?

There are vast quanties in huge pods of Orca in the seas. Only a fraction of a percentage are lucky enough, fortunate and priviledged enough to be working in a sterling environment that affords them a comparable life of luxury. Each animal is precious and extremely valuable... do you think for a moment they would be abused and thier health risked? A million dollar (or more) animal is taken care of. Period.

Yep...but really I would say not giving 'them' ANY credibilty allowing them to multiply by default is more in our capability than altering selective breeding of their ilk. Most of 'them' are just ignorant and misinformed by the truly stupid who also happen to hate their own species. F'em.

A lot of these centres (if not all) do research on these animals. The results are not only good for the animals but also for their entire species. Without them we would not know as much as we know about them now and would not be able to help any of the animals in case of disease or whatever. PETA is not helping. They are doing what they are good at which is making a fortune (enough money to buy an entire center apparently) by getting donations from gullible misinformed individuals and groups.

Those at PETA are psycho's, don't they know that animals in captivity are FAR better off then the ones in the wild? Zoo's and Aquariums are safe places of endangered animals, they are around people who care for them, they get plenty of food and are far away from poachers.
