Sorry to correct you Maria but it is actually 2009 Buffalo 2010 Atlanta 2011 Pittsburgh. I think the the Atlanta location is still tenative due to continuing negotiations on a theater. According to John Apperson we are 99% on Atlanta.
Respectfully,

Hey, thanks folks. I've been wanting to know that for a long time. While we are on the subject, does anyone know where the IBM Conventions will be? I know 2009 will be in Nashville.
And the big question---How likely are we to see another combined convention in 2013?

Greetings everyone,
Rob, thanks for straightening out the years for me, the cities and east coast were right only the years were in the wrong order....thanks again for the correction. Rob, while you are reading this and now posting on the Café, any chance you can get us some answers on what's going on with SAMtalking? You're on the Council as Dealer Chairman for the convention so maybe you know what's going on? Thanks and regards, Maria Ibanez |

Maria,
I am sorry but I have no information about SAMTalking. I have noticed you and others have asked that question on other threads. As a PNP you know all of the officers. Can you contact them directly and get the information? I am sorry I could not be more helpful. Respectfully Submitted, Rob

I rarely go to a convention. It has to be either in a very nearby city or in a city that has other fun stuff to do....(I get burned out on magic very quickly and need to balance it with other things)
While I realize that conventions need to be held in a variety of places so all members have an opportunity to go.... Pittburgh, buffalo, and Atlanta have literally no appeal to visit or return to. Okay, Buffalo you could drive to Niagara Falls,....but what else? Pittsburg, I wouldn't even wanna see the pirates play! Atlanta has a lot of scary parts. I just can't justify spending convention fees, airfare, hotel, food, etc in the neighborhood of $1500+ to visit those cities. Once again, I realize it can't be in Vegas or LA every year, but cities with a theme park, active nightlife, and interesting or historic qualities would be nice. Guess it just depends on your agenda....if magic convention 24/7 is your thing, these cities are great. |

Erich,
I completely understand how you feel. As a member of the convention committee maybe I can help you and others understand why we choose the cities we do. First we have to try and find affordable accommodations. Not just the price of a hotel room but the facilities we use for the convention as well. Unfortunately we are a relatively small convention. That alone limits our choices. Hotels in Vegas, LA, NY, etc in many cases are not interested in accommodating us at a reasonable rate. We also have to find cities that have a hotel facility that can accommodate a convention that is close to a appropriate theater that is also affordable. Theaters can cost thousands of dollars per night not including theater staff. And in most places that labor is at high union rates and we are not allowed to use volunteers. These considerations are just the tip of the iceberg. I could go on and on. Now the solution to our difficulties is very simple. If 2000 of our members would attend the convention every year we would be able to hold it on the moon if wanted to. Alas, getting one third of our membership to attend is a lofty goal. This brings us to the real problem and that is membership. If we the members of the SAM would each take up the torch and work to attract members by encouraging assembly growth and triple or quadruple our membership we could hold the most amazing conventions the world has ever seen. There are 300 million people in the US alone and we only have 6000 or so members. What's wrong with this picture. I apologize for digressing , SAM membership issues should be in another thread. Rest assured the convention committee works tirelessly 365 days a year to provide our members with a great convention. I know I can speak for Mr. Apperson (SAM Convention Chair) all suggestions are welcome. Respectfully Submitted, Rob Magic Unity Might

I'm glad that I did a search this morning, I really wasn't aware that the convention would be in Pittsburgh in 2010. Looks like it's a good time to start stockpiling the discretionary income.

Greetings,
my apologies for a few days delay on responding but Jay and I were out of the state for the holiday and celebrated our son's birthday with him up in Quantico. Rob, thank you for at least acknowledging that you have no answers. To answer your comments to me, you are correct, I have tried to contact the powers that be and have asked the same questions others have asked but much as others, I too have not received any answers. Tony, thank you for pointing out that not just myself but others are asking the question and not just here but on blogs, and other forums and no response from those in power. Greetings Rob, I sent out an e-mail to all the powers that be that were listed on the list of those to contact which has now gone out several times and on many newsgroups. The e-mail provided by Bruce Kalver, National President, when he decided to close SAMtalking also provided a contact e-mail at g-mail and all mail sent there bounces back with a disclaimer that one is not authorized to write to that group.
I am happy to see that you are at last becoming more active and involved - I know that in the past you had been very busy and not as able to get involved. Best always and keep a dream in the making Maria Ibanez |

Rob, the answers I've received from various officers have been:
- SAMtalking didn't belong to the National Council, so the National Council had no say in whether to continue it, suspend it, or abolish it. - The National Council voted to suspend it. It will reopen Any Minute Now. I was just a member, and what do I think I'm doing questioning the National Council? - The National Committee suspended it. (Don't look in the constitution or bylaws for anything called "the National Committee.") - It was suspended because Opie said things which upset the National Committee. - It was suspended because an unnamed person said untrue things. (The story varies as to whether these things were about expenditures, bylaws, or what.) - It was suspended because an unnamed person said true things. (The story varies, etc., etc.) To say that I'm a mite confused about the matter would be an understatement. *jeep! --Grandpa Chet

Greetings Grandpa, thank you for "clarifying" what is going on. Actually, you should be happy you at least received a response.
The National Council voted to suspend it? Humh???? As a Past National President, and Immediate Past National President at that, I wasn't asked for my vote -- IF THEY VOTED.....I am not one of those who did. Confused.....you can say that again! Keep a dream in the making Maria Ibanez |
