"A" set, new, but not my personal set.
For the record I don't think the video demo does any favor for the set. I would have made a commercial montage of the effects and reactions and taken the heat over the length of YouTube clip not working for the stronger routines. Then again, I know Docc and love his work. Seeing what is on these DVDs both from his best old material to some of his newest stuff is the reason to buy them for me. And by the way I'd rather give a new set to a deserving friend, rather than sell it too cheap. I'm already giving one set to a good friend and Hilford devotee. |

Watched the set. Great stuff! I'll concur the concepts and ideas for the pendulum routine is worth the price of the set.... one quible is using the rationale for getting the info off of the dead card... but I will reqork that so no p**k device is needed... e.g. variation Sneak Thief or imp.
I'm still chewing on the material but its a great purchase - because I have a lot of Osterlind and Banachek etc. DVDs, its interesting to compare performance styles.... Docc is unique!

I have neither wish or intension, nor time to discuss all the effects on those videos. All in all, it gave me very little, and that goes both for imho the dragged out, far to complex effects, and mr Hilford's presentation in itself. If you ask me, I'd say that a regular, paying audience would lose the track long before this performer came to the point. Again, this is my own impression and opinion. Sven

Sven, I asked for one presentation, not for you to discuss each one or the entire set.
You said "If you ask me, I'd say that a regular, paying audience would lose the track long before this performer came to the point". Well, I have seen Docc perform for a regular, paying, lay audience and based on their applause and comments during and after the show, he succeeded in doing what you say wouldn't happen. Having seen him perform and using some of his material to great success, I was just curious as to how you arrived at your view. We all have our own likes and dislikes. I don't like pumpkin flavored ice cream. I couldn't tell you why I don't like it, I just don't.

It really represents who the performer is and how he conveys to the audience. Docc's style may not suit you but none the less it is still effective. While I might not perform the effects as Docc, still he really does have some nice effects. Steve

From his ad copy, product design and drama, Docc has some amazing work.
There seems to be 2 camps regarding Docc - you either love him or you don't. Those that don't, well I guess that's fine, that means there are less performers doing these routines. But I have to wonder how many viewers are looking at the actual material or they just looking at Docc doing the material. Personally I have 3 routines from this set that I have been able to rotate into my show. That being said, I don't perform the routines at all like he does. It's been brought up before, but the perfect example is his Hard & Soft Drinks. This routine is killer. While I use a different premise, what really sold me on it was Docc's thinking - to take a somewhat morbid routine (living & dead) and give it a new theme. If you have the set still sitting on your shelf and you have dismissed it, I would encourage you to take a second look. |

So I recently won this set for a very low price on ebay.
Anyways, I’ve always been a huge fan of learning from books…I try to read several each week. On the other hand, I sometimes have a very hard time sitting through videos. I’m not sure why, but that’s the way it is. Therefore, I was hoping someone could point me to the right effects. Here are the characteristics of the material I usually prefer: Plays strong and is deceptive Can be done for a small group or one-on-one Uses minimal props, if any No playing cards or watches (hey, I like what I like) Technically efficient Can someone point me to the effects from these videos that meet my criteria? Thanks so much, Elliott |

Absolutely no offense intended, but I think it is more an indication that most people think that if you won't even exert the effort to just watch the DVD's than they aren't going to take the effort to go back over their set with your criteria in mind. I have the 4 volume set. I appreciate much of his work (not all), so consider that a disclaimer. That said, a few thoughts:
1. I was disappointed to see T-4-2 re-released (previously on a Flora mentalism vhs). I have used this effect for walk-around (it's perfect for it, actually). I kill with it, and would have preferred that it were not out on dvd. Purely selfish reasons here. 2. Likewise, Nightmare Coins is a thing of beauty. I have seen Docc slay a lay audience with NC, and I have performed it also. Again, it would have been better left in a book (Band of the Hand). 3. Rhineless ESP is worth the price of admission. It is clever, the routining is sound. To see it performed is golden. 4. Number of the Beast is an excellent effect. It does look like real mindreading. One lowlight was Uncle Klink. It does not fit my definition of a mentalism piece, and does not fit my performance. The weakest piece, IMHO. Methods are credited well (as far as I can tell). Explanations are thorough. The best nuggets one could gleam is his audience management skills. It is safe to say that most people won't perform his material for a myriad of reasons. I won't fall into that group, and will continue to work with his material. Great stuff. |

I would have to say that most of Docc's material is very well thought out, but IMHO sometimes comes off as a little unclear, and doesn't always live up to its innate potential.
There is some good material on these DVDs, but what I enjoyed most and found most valuable was the insight of Docc and David Alexander during the explanations. So much is said in regards to performing and the philosophy behind the effects. I would love to see a DVD with less "effects" and more of this "philosophy". PMC |

One thing is for sure, Docc is very easy too like. He comes off as very genuine. With that said, I didn't find anything from this set that I will use.
